Both were fantastic while they were alive. My Own Private Idaho is one of my favorite movies and performances. I thought Ledger was dynamite in The Dark Knight though. Great admiration for his work there.
If I had to choose ill say River because I lean more towards him personally but I can't deny greatness when I see it like Heath as Joker.

For someone who has (shamefully) yet to watch River in action, which performance of his should be my first watch, guys? Give me a lead

Give me a lead "My Own Private Idaho" is probably his most acclaimed work, so probably that one. I'd also suggest "Running on Empty" (well-deserved Oscar nom), "Stand by Me" and very underrated/sweet film called "Dogfight".

I don't think River did anything I like as much as Heathcliff's turn in Brokeback Mountain, but in general that kid had it together much, MUCH better. Like he had it when he was a pup. Heath was hella charming, but his actual stellar work is rare, and nowhere near as interesting. I've never seen what other people do in Monster's Ball, Candy, Dark Knight, etc.

Phoenix for me. I was always rather indifferent to Ledger, but I quite like all the work I've seen from Phoenix, and loved some of it.
