1917 reminded me a lot of The Revenant. Man on a mission, tech marvel, simple story, etc.
I think I prefer The Revenant is every aspect but I'm curious what you guys think. (I still like 1917. Mendes should win this year).
Better Film? The Revenant
Better Direction? AGI
Better Lead Performance? DiCaprio
Better Script? The Revenant
Better Cinematography? Lubezki
Better Payoff? The Revenant

1917 for all of it, and I really love The Revenant.

The Revenant at least has acting in it - I like acting because I'm corny like that. 1917 is mostly like Chariots of Fire to me where I noticed the sound, the score, I noticed how the shaft of light played on faces, all the techs etc. but......that's not enough for me. I like them about the same overall - 7.5ish - but 1917 is a war film that doesn't provide context or a POV on the war.....it's a really limited piece of work. Better Film? The Revenant Better Direction? Revenant Better Lead Performance? DiCaprio Better Script? The Revenant Better Cinematography? Lubezki Better Payoff? The Revenant

Revenant for all, probably. Both good films, but overrated imo

Better Film? 1917...by far Better Direction? Mendes Better Lead Performance? MacKay but I do appreciate what DiCaprio had to go through for his Oscar win Better Script? neither, but also 1917 Better Cinematography? Lubezki. I feel like anyone could have shot 1917. Apart from the nighttime sequences I couldn't even tell that it was Deakins's work. In contrast The Revenant's cinematography was undeniably Chivo's, and it was a lot more distinctive. Better Payoff? the one that doesn't end with DiCaprio breaking the fourth wall (can still remember giggling in the theater at that ending). 1917

1917 for everything except maybe cinematography. I liked The Revenant well enough, but it had essentially no lasting impact on me after seeing it.

1917 for all except maybe acting. Even there, I think I’d need to rewatch it to confirm.

Haven't yet seen 1917 but I gotta admit I'm not a fan of the Revenant. I liked Leo and Hardy in it and some technical stuff (cinematography etc.) but I didn't love the movie.

1917. Not that big a fan of either, though.

Better Film? The Revenant
Better Direction? Alley Alley handro
Better Lead Performance? Leo, I guess. Both fine.
Better Script? Not a fan of either. Take all that wife and son mumbo jumbo out of The Revenant and I'll go with that.
Better Cinematography? Lubezki
Better Payoff? Might go with 1917 for this.

I prefer The Revenant overall, but I do think 1917 has the better emotional payoff. The Revenant doesn't know what to do with itself after the (great) climatic fight scene, it just peters out and that really hurts the film overall. 1917 saves its best for the final half hour stretch or so and while most of the film was emotionally inert to me, the ending wound up being surprisingly gratifying.
I actually think the even better comparison point for 1917 is Gravity. I like 1917 more than that film, but it's kinda crazy how many narrative beats they share.

The Revenant is a masterpiece. 1917 was certainly impressive and I do respect the craft behind it, but it really wasn't as engaging as I hoped it were.

The Revenant for all, though I think 1917 is a bit underrated when it comes to its script (aside from its nomination, obviously). I like 1917 a good deal, but I was in love with The Revenant ten minutes into my first viewing and it only continued to exceed expectations from there. And has that Hardy performance, which topped nearly every performance in that year and subsequent years.

1917 was excellent, but The Revenant for every one of these. And it's not really close.

1917 for all except Cinematography, and even that is pretty close. The Revenant is a great film, 1917 is a masterpiece.
