Its International is bigger than all the recent SW flicks except for The Force Awakens. What can I say, movie's a major international hit which was also helped by the non-US media being sane about it. Plus SW has always been more of an American thing really.

Star Wars has always done relatively poorly in China, as the original trilogy was not released there and it hasn't got any built in fanaticism or nostalgia there. The lack of support from China, a huge territory where an effects laden tentpole like Star Wars would be expected to succeed has hurt it's full international box office potential, but the fact that the franchise/brand is still pretty huge without China says a lot.

Yeah, the franchise's reputation and box office in China generally hurts its overseas potential, which is why its worldwide gross looks lackluster when compared to say a Marvel film. I've actually heard one of the reasons why that is because a lot of people in China think that Star Wars, especially the recent films are way too western-centric, and lacking in big action. The prequels did relatively well in China because of their lightsaber battles, but the newer films aren't as fortunate. |
