Because these days it’s just the thing to do if you’re making a horror film. If it’s old, it’s creepy.
Sometimes it’s a bit eye rolling (“All I Have to Do Is Dream” in the Nightmare on Elm Street remake) other times it’s perfect and emphasizes the tonal creep factor and/or irony of the story.
Ari Aster for both of his films have chosen really memorable music selections to cut to credits on, especially using Frankie Valli at the end of Midsommar. Those are my recent favorites. Of course, The Shining’s is classic too, perhaps the best ever.

The whole film doesn't work but the first half of it works spectacularly well - Alan Parker's Angel Heart - and those scratchy, incredibly creepy crooning (often Blues) songs are used to subtle and chilling effect. They pop up over the end credits but without the vocals which is creepy in a different way.

of all the tropes in contemporary horror I'd say this one bothers me the least. If I'm already not buying what a movie is selling, the last thing I'm gonna be noticing is the credits or the credit music--I'm already over it. And like, Tiny Tim is practically the only good thing about Insidious.

It's not really an end credit needle drop, but The X-Files 'Home' is the go to answer for this for me. Even if it wasn't the actual old timey song.

I've always loved the choice of using "Hush, Hush, Hush, Here Comes the Bogeyman" for the credits of Jeepers Creepers, not only because it works but also as a means to not overuse the title track.

Can't think of any but Green Door by Jim Lowe would be perfect I think in a horror, that chorus especially...... if you wanna have fun with it, you can slow it down on youtube and it makes the song incredibly creepy. The Cramps covered it...... QT used it in OUATIH (bastard!), Dalton sings it flippantly while on TV. There's some ambiguity to the lyrics and rumors about it too...

Love the use of "Mr. Sandman" at the end of Halloween 2.
