Jesus Christ, that was a fascinating trainwreck.
You never get used to the mo-cap. That uneasy uncanny valley feeling never goes away. It honestly comes to life more when it leans into being fucking horrifying, as opposed to the family friendly musical romp it’s supposed to be. The songs could be slashed in half and you’d lose nothing. EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM long overstays their welcome. And goddamn, the pandering to the furry fanbase.
And cockroach people! COCKROACH PEOPLE!
Like, holy hell, you guys!

So in other words, cult following incoming??? If it only it went a lot more wild. That’s another thing about this movie, is that the song sequences have no energy to them. Hooper is just not a musical director. Even Les Miserables was no musical showcase, but overcame it by pure virtue of the actors. When he has to rely on pure song and dance spectacle, he’s miserably out of his element.

Sounds like bad decision after bad decision. Why do studios make such horrible decisions like this with established IP. It is crazy.

Why do you do this to yourself? A) I can’t not watch a new movie musical. B) I wanted to laugh at how bad it was (fucking cockroach people), but it barely even give me that.

Honestly, if it had just leaned into how scary it looked, it would have been so much better. That’s when it comes to life, even though that’s obviously not the intention.

I've only seen a local production and those human cats getting all up near your face was off-putting and fun. This looks like a mistake.

www.imdb.com/title/tt5697572/When’s the last time that a movie with this kind of budget, production and cast started off with ratings like this? Has there ever been a time? I can only think of Battlefield Earth and Catwoman, although their casts aren’t as acclaimed as the cast in Cats.

The songs could be slashed in half and you’d lose nothing. EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM long overstays their welcome. And goddamn, the pandering to the furry fanbase. And cockroach people! COCKROACH PEOPLE! Like, holy hell, you guys! I just came from this, and I agree that you don't ever get used to the mo-cap. It would have looked more natural if they had just gone with people in cat suits like they do when they do a stage production, and add in tails, and maybe whiskers later. On the other hand, the few moments of laughter I got are because of how weird it got. Critics weren't kidding when they were talking about how horny it was, lol. Maybe I'm a perv, but I kept laughing at how much it seemed that Cats could only made for furries. Like the lead cat, Victoria, was horny on main all the time, and I expect a sequel would be about how she doesn't know if her kittens are Mr. Mistoffelees or the other cat that was always there, I think Munkustrap. I didn't learn any of the cats' names except those that had songs. Or Rebel Wilson's number aside from the nightmare causing mice and cockroaches, was so bizarre with the way she kept lifting her legs up. I know it's because she's supposed to be mimicking a real cat, but the way it's done in the movie, it looked totally sexual to me. Of course Rum Tum Tugger has always been that way in the musical, where it's still sort of weird, but in the movie, it's like a hundred times weirder. The railway cat's outfit that reminded me of something out of a Studio 54. I think the Taylor Swift/Idris Elba number takes the cake though as far as uncomfortable horniness on display. I only wish that Swift had a better voice, even though I do like some of her songs, but it just wasn't powerful enough; although, maybe that was a good thing that she didn't get into it even more. Then of course Idris Elba's Macavity without his trench coat on! That was just wrong on Tom Hooper's part, lol. Other than that though, and some of the songs, it was duller than I expected. I do agree with your post further down that the song numbers don't really have any energy which is a shame because there's not really a story there, so the musical numbers need to hold everyone's attention. Also I thought that Jennifer Hudson was pretty bad even some of her singing imo. I read about the snot thing before, but I didn't realize how true or distracting it really was. The other actors were okay. I can't say they were good, but most of them sang pretty well, and the dancing for the most part was enjoyable too.

This comment was on the Youtube video for Mark Kermode's review:
"I wish they had cast Christian Bale. He would have lived on Whiskas for 6 months and shat in his neighbours garden."
