Well, I thought this would be good to do because a lot of people rank the first 3 as their personal GOAT or close to it ........ and Pesci has been so enthusiastically welcomed back now and his role is so unlike his previous work maybe you think "Now, I think he could have done (insert role here)......."
So which is it - who did we miss out on the most by them being away.......and if you could change acting history how would you change it?
You kinda have to assume DDL's retirement is permanent (which I kind of do actually) ..........ymmv

My retirement, which I may never get because the government changed the labor laws.
Gene Hackman, who is one of the faces of 70s cinema despite being overlooked by film buffs and could use a comeback.

DDL doesn't belong this, he just retired 2 years ago and probably makes a come back if PTA or Spielberg will beg for him.
I miss Jack, I hope he'll comeback soon. This is a myth ray - this is the 2019 Movie Awards version of 2013 Oscar Buzz's "The Irishman Is Never Happening!" that people will then deny they ever said because they pretend they're right about everything! The dude is gooooooooooooooooooone - last week he bought a six pack, an 8-ball of cocaine and picked up 2 women on the street - he traded one Oscar for the hat and boots he's wearing here - does that sound like a man who's coming back to Hollywood? Pfffft........

Gene because there are so many roles he would have been great in. I think he was Payne's first choice for Nebraska but I'm glad Dern got that role because he was great.

Day-Lewis was a big loss in that he showed no signs of having lost it, but then it's not all that great a loss on account of there was barely anything to lose! Nicholson seemed to have long ceased giving much of a shit from what I could tell. His Departed performance is a blast, but also a work of egotistical monstrosity. From the badass back to back of The Pledge and About Schmidt to his last snoozer of a movie it was almost a decade. Pesci also seemed to have stopped much caring about what he was doing. I might be one of the three people on Earth that think Lethal Weapon 4 was hilarious, and he's one of the major reasons for it, and that scene in The Good Shepherd is amazing, even if it didn't really need to be in the movie, but he done anything vital for a long time (did anyone see Love Ranch?) this latest performance might suggest what might have been, but then he was motivated to come back for one last rodeo with his old buddies... Would anything/anyone else have gotten this much out of him? Therefore I probably go with Hackman. His awesome 2001 was still very recent history when he packed it in. I still miss Sean Connery too He might have made nothing but awful movies for years, but god damn he was electric.

Jack. By. Far.
It's one of the best and most recognized actors in film history. Retiring in his early 70s is a big loss for the cinema. I never stopped hoping he'd return. (ok, now I have...)
DDL, I dunno, I strongly believe he'll come back and make more films eventually.
Pesci's come back is the best he could have imagined. Hackman (and Connery if you ask me) were also very big losses, they had many years ahead of them to offer much more to the movies.

I went with Gene Hackman because I don't think he'll ever come back whereas I think DDL could if someone made the right offer, and Pesci might be more open to acting again now. As for Nicholson, I've heard conflicting things. First I heard that he had trouble remembering his lines which is why he retired which he later denied, then he was going to do the Toni Erdmann remake, but then he dropped out. So maybe he's not completely done either.

Nicholson should've retired a decade earlier. Hackman could've kept going but honestly, I think 2001 would've been the best send-off year for a legend like him. So DDL by default.
