Both were nominated at the 2018 Golden Globes for Best Actress in a Limited Series (alongside Reese Witherspoon BLL and Sarandon/Lange in Feud).
I thought Nicole was good but out-acted by Reese who gave a far more natural performance, whereas Biel was just captivating in a role/show that could easily have been very trashy and fake.

Biel. I think it's her best, a devastated perf where she feels wrong in all her roles as wife, mother, neighbor - full of rage and confusion and discomfort - like how she reacts to seeing the mother on the beach playing with their kid's hair. You forget how beautiful Biel is. Side note - Carrie Coon is great in S2.
Kidman is okay but w/ BLL I prefer Dern, Streep, and Reese. Kidman I thought was the least convincing mother of the bunch and who across the two seasons doesn't really deepen or challenge how we see her. They bring in some big elements (the sexuality, the pills) but I don't see it in the perf; the other actors have more smartly thought thru their roles.

Biel is good, but Kidman gives one of the best performances of the decade and dominated a pretty phenomenal cast. So Kidman, by a lot.
I know the comparison is only for season 1, but even over the course of the two seasons of BLL, Kidman has been the clear MVP of the series. Interesting to note that Kidman is so far the only actor across both seasons to get major individual nominations (Aside from Meryl Streep, Kidman has been the only cast member from BLL to gain individual recognition for Season 2 to date).
It's also kinda interesting how Kidman dominates her show. She slow burns her way through it with phenomenal layers of nuance and truth, while most of her castmates ( Streep, Witherspoon, Dern) enagage in a scenery chewing competition that's entertaining, but not as deep or layered. It's always interesting to see an actor trust that less can mean more.

I am more surprised and invested by Biel actually ..........but don't know if I'd pick her - because I have mixed feelings on BLL S1 anyway (and I didn't care for S2 much at all). I do mostly like Kidman - the forced sex against the wall is a real acting moment for her and kind of daring in how she plays it, and she has other high points ........but at other times it (and she) are just too much soap opera-y and surface level.
But BLL really is in many bigger ways, not just Kidman, not my kind of thing .........like vegan pizza or non-alcoholic beer .....

Biel gave such a wonderful, understated performance. A revelation I dare say. Hope she gets more opportunities to show off her range in the future, and dump that awful husband of hers while she’s at it.
