3. As this is in the movies section of the place does that mean we have to discount all their TV work, because if so then Helen 'small screen' Mirren doesn't get anywhere near this list. What's she got like one bad ass, undeniable, magical big screen role in The Last Station (I don't think I'm forgetting anything ) and that's pretty much it, give or take her Gosford Park one (unless we count her very different kind of magical in Savage Messiah) Cor Blimey!

To be honest, I think her filmography is actually kinda underrated. Sure she often picks films that feel like "intentional Oscar plays" (etc... Hitchcock), and her recent choices as of late haven't turned out so well, but you've got classic high British dramas ( The Madness of King George, The Queen - The Cook, The Thief & Her Lover - Very provocative too), epic fantasy ( Excalibur), well-constructed thrillers ( Eye in The Sky, The Debt), and even some sci-fi (the underrated 2010). There's a lot of different types of films to choose from, both past and present. She may be too prolific for her own good. She's got some gems in her filmography of course, but when you have a 100+ movies, to some the good starts to feel insignificant if the majority of them are so-so or forgettable projects. I believe that's affected how some of these critics view Mirren. I agree that her filmography doesn't feel as bad as often claimed, but that's film twitter for ya. Yeah, it seems like a lot of her recent projects haven't exactly taken off, which is a shame. It's really given people the impression that she's been in so few good movies, when that couldn't be the case at all.

Saoirse Ronan? British? Poorly made research.

Colman (Tyrannosaur), Jackson (Marat/Sade) and Rampling (The Night Porter) have all time great perfs, but none of them have quite reached that level elsewhere. Ronan is always the best thing about anything (save for Lady Bird ) and is one of the few actors today to have true movie star charisma and beauty (I could see her doing anything from The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer to Double Indemnity to Written on the Wind. She's magical (not British, but eh). Also choosing Maggie Smith, who has been spectacular for decades. To fill the last spot... I'm gonna have to go back to Rampling.

Helen Mirren only has 4 votes. Over a year later, my Top 3 is the same (Mirren, Julie Christie, Winslet) but a few have soared over Watts who was my #5 but now feels small next to others... like Glenda Jackson, or Maggie Smith who prob climbed up the most for me, and a curiously yet unmentioned Miranda Richardson who has a boatload of good and great work (Dance with a Stranger, Kansas City, Spider, etc). So question for anyone - Who's moved up or down your fav list since voting here?

Big fan, her '92 is legendary (The Crying Game, Enchanted April, Damage) and she's my win for Kansas City (with JJL) and Spider.

As far as film actresses go, Tilda Swinton is the best active actress on this list.

For their ability to juggle comedy and drama, has to be Walters and Colman for me. Couldn't make my mind up on someone to give the third vote to.
