Well, everybody knows for me that it's Huppert in any language, any time period, ever. I often say there's 2 ways to judge GOAT in any comparison- the amount of great performances vs. the peak performance level - so the Olivier vs. Brando argument more or less. If you look at any comparison it almost always comes down to this structure.
Well, Huppert, wins both of those - and no male could ever do that in the same way - but Huppert is just something "other" to me, the deepest skill set, and how she then applies that skill set across roles, for an insanely long time - to me, there is something almost otherworldly about her.

I think Cotillard smokes 'em all, and yes, that includes Huppert, who I think is technically magnificent but far too austere and clinical for me to fully embrace.

Binoche for me, who I adore. Cotillard close second.

Huppert, Adjani, Deneuve, and Binoche (in that order) are tiers above the others. Didn't know we were crazy for Cotillard here, who I like but there's a softness to her that lets down some of the roles, whereas Eva Green, who doesn't have Cotillard's heights yet, I prefer just bc she's inordinately electric, sexy, playful, and unpredictable on screen.

Juliette Binoche for me, closely followed by Isabelle Adjani.

Huppert, Adjani, Binoche, and Cotillard are toppers.
Deneuve can be very good but I wouldn’t put her on the same level.
Haven’t seen enough of Sandrine Bonnaire to have an informed opinion but she should be included.

Deneuve is the best and I can't even see Cotillard overtake her. Therfore Marion wasn't consistent enough.
Ranked: Deneuve Huppert Binoche Adjani (though I'd put her best performances maybe at the very top) Cotillard
Laurent
Seydoux Green
Tautou

For sex? Prime Adjani, though Seydoux is FILTH.
For acting? IzHupz, with Binoche not far off.

It will always be Deneuve for me - she is a hypnotic, enigmatic, ethereal star.

That's interesting, because Huppert is the actor/actress who for me has the biggest gap between her best and second-best performances. The first film of hers I saw was The Piano Teacher, and I maintain that that is a top 5-10 performance in film history and completely mindblowing, but with every subsequent Huppert film I've seen, I've found nothing remotely as impressive.

Well, I once wrote on here that all actors - even the very best ever - Mastroianni, Brando, Olivier whomever - get remembered for just 5-6 roles tops. Even if they've been great far more than that basically to the general public (not us though) that's your legacy - and to me Huppert's top ~5 is La Ceremonie (my all-time #1), Story of Women, The Piano Teacher, Violette, La Séparation.......um, I'm excluding Loulou and The Lacemaker among many (many) others where she almost, to me, has no lesser turns among those at all - theres just different tools in play from her skill set. I could easily put The Pianist second.......or 10th.....so I guess when an actor can do that for me it makes being a fan a lot of fun. I was a fan first, then she seduced me and now it's all jumbled up in my love for her anyway Who is your pick here?

Voted Binoche to push her into solo 3rd place. I just think her best performances are better than anyone's on the list that I've seen. Very close between she and Cotillard for me. Not overly familiar with a couple of them, though.

Cotillard really impressed me in La Mome and the confessional scene of The Immigrant, but that's not enough; I didn't get the 2D1N hype, sort of the same way I didn't get the Hanks Captain Phillips hype. Eva Green is always interesting, but doesn't have a high wire film performance IMO; love her work on Penny Dreadful though. Binoche I've always liked, but no performance of hers has knocked me out, though I appreciated the ambiguities she played in Certified Copy. Same with Deneuve. Not sure what to think of Adjani; based on the five or so performances of hers I've seen, she's like Monica Bellucci crossed with Nicolas Cage.
