Why is everyone refering to Vatican City as a separate country??? It's not. Apparently it is.It's the smallest city in the world and an independent state.

Why is everyone refering to Vatican City as a separate country??? It's not. Vatican is the only country in the world with an elective monarch 👑. It has an army too.

When I visited it, I thought it was part of Italy.
Never agreed with such cities/states such as Vatican City, Monaco, Gibraltar etc. being independent states or countries but whatever.

Vatican is the remaining of a state that extended in all central Italy in the past centuries. Italy is way younger and has a shorter history.

And on the other hand Vatican having ancient history? Well, probably because during all these centuries of the Roman Empire, Vatican was a state (dunno, I'm just assuming) while there was no such thing as Italy.

What am I missing here??? Maybe you mixed up the Roman Empire (ended in 476) and The Holy Roman Empire (that ended in 1806 after Napoleon wars)

Ok, the capital of the empire was not Rome, but it had been extended geographically and still in full power... (totally off topic conversation )

If they have own laws and their status is accepted by other countries (not exactly the case with Gibraltar though, which is part of the UK officially) why not?
San Marino for example usually is to be said to be the world's oldest existing sovereign state.

Byzantine Empire was considered to be the "continuation" of sorts of the Roman Empire. But either way I got what Cherry meant. The Roman Empire to its initial form lasted until 476.
