Looks like most almost everyone is as underwhelmed by Dern's performance as I was.How is she getting so much traction for this role?.It's inexplicable.

Her Hollywood cachet has grown exponentially in the last few years, she's in a juggernaut film, her reviews were excellent, and in a year that's perceived as "weak"... It's the perfect storm. |

But Renata Klein was a well-rounded character whereas Nora barely feels like a real person which is more Baumbach's fault than Dern's but my point is I don't think it's a "familiarity breeds contempt" situation. |

Partly that, partly the lack of overly strong competition, partly the fact that Supporting Actress is a dumping ground for coattail wins for films they really like and want to give at least one major award to, partly the fact that Dern is Hollywood royalty who has been really entrenched in the Academy a great deal the last few years with work behind the scenes. |

I can totally see where this feeling's coming from, even if I disagree with it. Her MS character is indeed quite similar to Renata: the no-nonsense, sassy attitude, the meme-able one-liners/monologues, the California setting... But I don't think it's the same performance at all. Her Nora has a warmer presence IMO, and she's less "oh, I'm so rich and self-made and I own the world" than her Big Little Lies "counterpart". Maybe the fact that we're so used with category fraud is making us get underwhelmed by true supporting parts (I remember people saying the same thing about King, Metcalf and Janney in the past years, that they were barely in their movies). |

That was a big thing for me -- I adore her work as Renata Klein and this just felt like a significantly toned-down version of the same thing. She comparatively has nothing to do here. And her big monologue is the most obvious Film Twitter pandering ever (even if there's nothing actually wrong about it). |

I feel like her last scene with Nicole at the party revealed her to just be a pretty ruthless character, whereas Renata is much more likable and much more human to me despite her large-than-life attitude she projects most of the time. |
