2019 San Diego Film Critics Society's Award Nominations

Two critics groups mentions for Wesley Snipes so far today. Interesting....

Also, surprised DiCaprio isn't showing up more. The Sandler surge probably isn't helping.

Love the Luce love; Spencer is terrific, and Harrison Jr noteworthy too - the type of interesting perf that works no matter what bc of how they construct the character, any false traces just add to the mystery of him.

Snipes - yikes, I actually like him but not in Dolemite, a bad and unfunny perf.

Pacino - could it be true? his first critics nom? Christmas come early? But srsly - I was in San Diego recently and who knows how many voters overheard my eternal Pacino praising.

Snipes is a clear dark horse for a nomination. Him turning up like this today is notable. I don't even presume he'll get an Oscar nomination in the end, but it doesn't hurt that he's getting critics support.

I think people need to accept the consensus is leaning to Pesci and if that happens, Pitt will get his coronation since Pesci will not win with the industry.

I didn't say he wasnt. I think Leo and Bobby need to hold off on getting a tux.

Who's gonna be the 1st critics group to nominate Kevin Garnett for Uncut Gems?

The Two Popes is weird imo. 

It did place first in the Telluride Film Poll which is supposed to be one of the best indicators of the Oscar race, and then it also won several audience awards around the country. It also won silver at Camerimage for its cinematography. 

However, I would guess it's because of the shortened season and Netflix already having two big contenders that it feels like its been forgotten about. 

I'm not even sure about it at the Globes anymore because Sandler is going Drama, the Globes might still invite Pesci even if he doesn't come because he won NYFCC, and Best Drama feels very crowded now that I don't know if Netflix is going to get 3 contenders in there especially if they don't expand the number of spots and keep it to 5. On top of that, I've heard that they really liked Richard Jewell, so assuming The Irishman and Marriage Story are locked, it's going to be a bloodbath for the last 3 spots. 

1917 - I would consider this another lock along with the two Netflix films. 

Ford v Ferrari - They nominated Rush for Best Picture over Dallas Buyers Club and Blue Jasmine, and FvF is slightly higher profile which should be a plus for the Globes. 

Joker - European critics loved this more than American ones, so I won't be surprised to see it nominated for Best Drama. Plus The Hangover won Best Comedy/Musical and War Dogs was nominated by them for Best Actor, so they can be friendly to Phillips's films. 

Little Women - They snubbed Gerwig for directing for Lady Bird, so I could see them doing a makeup nomination, and I would think it's a good bet that if she's nominated for Directing that LW will be for Film.

Richard Jewell - They love to be one of the first to nominate late breaking films, and Richard Jewell has done very well so far with other precursors. They weren't there for American Sniper, but he's been nominated there 9 times over the year excluding his Henrietta Award for World Film Favorite in 1971. They've even nominated him 5 times for Best Original Score and Best Original Song!?! 

At SAG, I don't think it gets in. Maybe Hopkins, but I feel like the actors are a set pair that if one gets in then the other one will. With Murphy being in a more SAG friendly film and being more known, and Egerton being in a popular film and campaigning a lot with Elton John that Pryce probably misses there. 

I have no idea about the guilds. I could see it getting nominations there for like Production Design and Cinematography, but I don't know that the steak eaters will get behind for Best Picture like they might for Joker or Ford v Ferrari. 

It should be fine at BAFTA of course, but I don't know if that will be enough to help it because BAFTA are the last nominations to come out before the Oscars.
