Still missing Irishman, but for me its the flash of Shutter Island that wins my heart. The others aren't very good.

For me it's easily The Irishman. I thought Shutter Island was an admirable misfire, Hugo just lacked magic and pop, The Wolf of Wall Street an interesting mess, and Silence just a general mess. His 2013 effort is definitely the closest overall, and both that and his latest share this sprawling sort of all over the place nature, but I thought The Irishman was the more cohesive, focused effort overall, and more importantly a far more interesting in so many more ways sort of movie. Honestly, his two movies this year are two of the greatest things he's produced in his career, and that's the first time I've felt that in a very long time.

My 1 and 2 of the year and they are deceptively and crucially linked too - ie movies about legends (Dylan himself and the actors mythos in The Irishman) and it's inherent traps and burdens. I see a connection between these much more than I do with Silence and The Irishman too. There's a lot of interesting things in Scorsese's two 2019 films actually that for now at least are lost in talks on such fascinating topics as who will or won't get Oscar nominations
