Yep, bout that time of year again:
Ive been pretty pleased this year with the performances I've seen, most of them deserve the praise they get. Right now, I will say if he ends up sweeping and even though I liked him, Pitt in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. He's not oscar worthy in my opinion.

Phoenix's performance in Joker wouldn't even crack his top 5 or 10 performances. Though it's certainly the most acting he's ever done.

Joaquin Phoenix in Joker. Yikes.
Lupita Nyong'o in Us. Double yikes.

DiCaprio. I like the performance but the amount of praise he is getting baffles me.

I find a lot of DiCaprio's performances overpraised but I do think he is genuinely great in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Phoenix in Joker is literally one of the worst, most hysterical leading performances I've ever seen.

Haven't yet seen many of this year's most acclaimed performances but up to now I feel Pitt's work in OUATIH is not Oscar worthy. He's very good, funny, cool etc. and of course long overdue for an acting win but not really special in this movie.
He's gonna win either way...
On the other hand, I totally believe Leo deserves a nod.

It pains me to see the mentions of Phoenix in Joker - just as a physical performance alone I found it mesmerizing myself.
But back to the topic.......the whole cast of Knives Out - aside from the aces Christopher Plummer - it has a few snappy great lines (in the first hour) where no one is great and that's supposed to get a SAG Best Ensemble nod - for what exactly?

And Phoenix in Joker >>>

Definitely Lupita in Us, though I do think she's good. Nobody seems to be seeing or talking about the movie, but the colossal letdown that is Harriet would definitely factor into this conversation too. Throw Antonio Banderas in there too. He was better in Expendables 3.

Lupita’s turn in Us confirmed what I always suspected: she’s just not a good actress. Not sure what everyone else is seeing in her.

Florence Pugh in Fighting with my Family. She got raves for this and it was such an average performance. She was legit great in Midsommar though.

Jlo in The Hustlers, her only great thing is the last scene outside the Police Office I tend to think her performance is overrated but then I remember her entry scene and that alone deserves a win😍

Pitt OUATIH. If I was counting When They See Us, Pitt wouldn't make my Top 10 Supporting this year. There's nothing wrong with the perf - he's charming as hell - but clearly to me Leo, with humor and nuance, big scenes, development, weight, weakness, and more, is the acting standout there by a mile - but somehow Pitt is attracting more discussion and praise and may well win an Oscar. Overrated.

I don't like to use the word 'overrated', but so far I haven't seen a single performance that has left me speechless, that kind of performance you watch and think "My God, what an amazing, superb, spectacular performance!" .. " I've seen a lot of good performances, but no performance I would say is amazing, like Toni and Olivia's performances last year, for example. Answering your question, Margot Robbie on OUATIH. EDIT.Brad Pitt - Ad Astra Laura Dern - Marriage Story

I'm gonna throw a mention to Florence Pugh in Midsommar. I like Pugh as an actress but I've yet to see her in anything good -- Lady Macbeth is a classic example of a great lead performance trapped in a film that's otherwise pretty bad -- and I really don't get the acclaim she's received here. She's good enough and I don't think a better performance could've elevated the film at all anyway, but there are supporting performances there both softer (Blomgren) and louder (Poulter) than hers that stuck with me more -- but she sure did ... cry?? I guess??
I know this won't be a popular take but I've been hurt by many of the mentions in this thread (namely DiCaprio and Pitt, wtf) so ... it's what it is!

Definitely Phoenix's Arthur Fleck, which is probably my least favorite role of his career. I also thought Pitt's performance in Ad Astra was (much like the film) somehow both silly and painfully dull. And I felt Beanie Feldstein gave without a doubt the most annoying and grating performance I saw in 2019 in Booksmart, and though she hasn't garnered any awards attention I am utterly mystified by the critical praise for both that role and the movie itself.
As far as the films I do like:
I think I might have loved Knives Out more than anyone on the board (it's currently just behind Parasite as my favorite film of the year, and it might actually overtake it), but honestly I think Daniel Craig may be one of my least favorite performances in the film. I think he's still very good in it, but there are a few times his ridiculous accent goes just a bit too broad for my tastes. And while he is very funny, I personally think Ana de Armas, Chris Evans, Michael Shannon, Don Johnson, Christopher Plummer, and Jamie Lee Curtis are all funnier and better than Craig in it. So while I still very much enjoyed his presence (and loved the character's role within the script), I wouldn't call his performance as Benoit Blanc anywhere close to the highlight of that movie or ensemble. Everyone is great but to me that film belongs to Ana de Armas.
More controversially, if Pacino gets nominated for The Irishman over Pesci or wins, I think I would find that role a bit overrated. To me both Pesci and De Niro are indeed Oscar-worthy, but Pacino, while still extremely fun, is not. He ably fulfills the function of the character by going big and loud in order to infuse the middle of the film with life and energy, and he does bring some warmth and humanity to the role in the quieter scenes, but I wouldn't call it one of his more impressive performances. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy it very much, but it reminds me of Nicholson's work in The Departed, which is entertaining as hell but not (IMO) worthy of awards consideration.

Quite a few but since I have him in mind because he won NYFCC yesterday I will say Antonio Banderas in Pain and Glory. A good performance that serves the film well but not one that I found particularly memorable to the point of winning awards. I can easily think of 5 Spanish actors who I feel could have given this role something extra. Not to mention that I think he pretty much got outshined by most of the cast.
