Liked all 5, but it's pretty clear to me either Streep or Shue should've won based on the nominees....
1. Streep 2. Shue
^slightly between those 2, but they're definitely the 2 to talk about this ceremony. Both are really sweet and beautiful movies elevated by their central leads.
#3-5.... could rearrange between the 3 any way, but if I had to choose, it'd be slightly....
3. Thompson 4. Stone 5. Sarandon
My nominees:
1. Vanessa Paradis - Elisa 2. Meryl Streep - Bridges of Madison County 3. Elisabeth Shue - Leaving Las Vegas 4. Jennifer Jason Leigh - Dolores Claiborne 5. Gong Li - Shanghai Triad 6. Heather Matarazzo - Welcome to the Dollhouse
But Vanessa Paradis overall is on a whole 'nother level from all of these.

I can't believe I haven't seen Streep yet. As far as ranking the others, I'd go with Shue > Sarandon > Thompson > Stone. Shue and Sarandon are the clear standouts with Thompson being really solid too. Stone I could take or leave.
My own nominees: 1. Julianne Moore, Safe 2. Elizabeth Shue, Leaving Las Vegas 3. Susan Sarandon, Dead Man Walking 4. Parker Posey, Party Girl 5. Jennifer Jason Leigh, Georgia

I haven't seen Sarandon. All the rest are fine I guess. Not a great bunch, especially in a year with some fantastic female performances.
Here are the ones I would nominate:
1. Lili Taylor - The Addiction 2. Virginie Ledoyen - A Single Girl 3. Charlie Yeung - Love In The Time Of Twilight 4. Julie Delpy - Before Sunrise 5. Miho Nakayama - Love Letter

I agree that Streep and Shue are head above the rest (they're the only ones making my lineup), but I give the edge to Streep. This is perhaps my favorite performance of hers.
My lineup:
1. Meryl Streep, The Bridges of Madison County 2. Nicole Kidman, To Die For 3. Elisabeth Shue, Leaving Las Vegas 4. Julie Delpy, Before Sunrise 5. Alicia Silverstone, Clueless

1. Thompson 2. Stone 3. Sarandon 4. Streep 5. Shue
I believe it's one of the very best lineups in this category ever.
As for personal nominees:
1. Jennifer Jason Leigh, Georgia (an all-timer if ever I saw one) 2. Sandrine Bonnaire, La Cérémonie 3. Emma Thompson, Sense and Sensibility 4. Sharon Stone, Casino 5. Susan Sarandon, Dead Man Walking
And then there's Streep and Shue and Julie Delpy in Before Sunrise and Gong Li in Shanghai Triad and Annette Bening in The American President and Heather Matarazzo in Welcome to the Dollhouse and Alicia Silverstone in Clueless and Nicole Kidman in To Die For and Julianne Moore in Safe and Kathy Bates in Dolores Claiborne...And I still have so much to see! What a year.

Remember when line-ups were this stacked? Shue is my win for that year. Streep would've made a worthy alternate. Sarandon was very strong but she's been better elsewhere. Thompson was solid per usual. Stone is the weakest link but still would've made an acceptable nominee in most years.

I voted for Streep simply because her performance is the most memorable and totally film-elevating, but any of the women (save Stone) would have made worthy winners.
