So if Phoenix and Ronan are nominated this year, and Phoenix seems a near certainty; will that be the first time two of the acting nominees in the same year are being nominated for playing characters that other actors have been nominated for playing before?
(I know you could kind of say that the same thing has happened three times with A Star Is Born, but looking for examples outside of that one.)

I always remember this because of how that year was WWII movies vs. movies with Queen Elizabeth in them. From Wiki, Plus Geoffrey Rush was in both Shakespeare in Love and Elizabeth too.

The ASIB example is even broader since Willem Dafoe was nominated for playing Van Gogh that same year and Kirk Douglas was nominated for playing him before.

A slightly different twist as an Oscar first - if Phoenix and Pacino get nodded this year it will be the first (I think?) time 2 nominees in the same year will be up for roles previously played by the same actor (Nicholson).
Might be wrong about this but so far not coming up with any.......
