Pretty shocked to see The Lighthouse and Uncut Gems get (nearly) shutout by a critics group. But, again, itβs pretty obvious this group just desperately wants to be an Oscar precursor.

Some head scratching choices (no Mendes despite them nominating 1917 everywhere else, no Joker in blockbuster, Robbie for OUATIH and not Bombshell, De Niro in FX performance, etc.), but I guess they could have been worse.
Pacino should be okay, but I thought he'd pop up everywhere with these smaller groups. Erivo probably still gets nominated too, but she missed here and the Spirits. The Spirits make sense, but this group went for some pretty basic choices overall in the acting categories, and she still couldn't get in.

De Niro in FX performance I don't know why people think this is such a weird thing. That was the entire conceit of them using CGI in the first place. His performance is heavily augmented by digital wizardry.

Calling it a performance of CGI is wrong I think and anyway it's used for what, less than half the perf? It really isn't like Rylance in BFG or Brolin in Endgame where it's an entire physical alteration to the point of being voice-work. These critics gave the middle finger to De Niro, that's all.

The confusion over which Irishman guy is better has already begun. This is how Brad Pitt walks into an Oscar by accident. I'm not going to complain if it happens.

It looked to me like they used it for most of the movie. Just because he only looked like Steve Carell in Welcome to Marwen for "less than half" of a near-four-hour runtime doesn't change that they touched him up, at the very least, for most if not all of the movie. That was a huge factor in why they used the old crew in the first place, so Scorsese could play around with de-aging tech. Just because he wasn't purple or sixteen feet tall doesn't change that. If the critics wanted to give the middle finger to De Niro, they would've left him out completely. They saw a chance to recognize him in a category that he fit the bill for as much as, say, Pitt in Benjamin Button would've if the prize had been around in 2008, and they took it.

I feel bad for whoever tells De Niro his competition here is Pikachu! To me, the very last thing I thought about after the movie was whether his forehead wrinkles were convincingly smooth or not. I didn't bring the sfx up in my review bc it literally wasn't on my mind. While I get if someone is distracted by it that matters - but it's still a different thing next to who he's being compared to. The De Niro perf is JUST - actually more practical than it is 'under CGI' - physically on location more than any other actor - the inflection of his voice in the older scenes - he wore contacts, he wore bigger shoes, there was a body coach on set, etc. Idk, comparing him to non-human falsed-up recreations feels odd...

This isn't a case of Will Smith in Gemini Man. I won't go so far as to say this is an FU to De Niro, but I'd have called this a head-scratcher if I thought these awards were worth scratching my head over.

Idk, comparing him to non-human falsed-up recreations feels odd... I highly doubt De Niro will even know about this. I wouldn't put too much thought into it: it's a category without a whole lot of options, and they opted to pick an actor who was augmented by visual effects (of which practical effects are a part) in a movie they clearly liked to pad the lineup. De Niro's placement makes sense there.

I agree this isn't like Gemini Man, bc they recreated Will Smith's face over his own - there's videos of this - so when a tear drops down his cheek, that's a fake tear. That's different than what they did in The Irishman. Also, they nom Pesci like he wasn't de-aged with the same tools.....

Who are these people (to put it nicely) and why do they hate the two greatest actors alive? Daniel Day-Lewis and Mark Rylance weren't eligible for consideration. Wrong

I'll just wait for the real (non online) LA critics group next month ... I think I'm just going to wait for televised awards only actually - that whole Dafoe/Florida Project thing from a couple years back solidified that whole issue for me.
