I know that it's super early -just for example, at this time in 2016, Annette Bening seemed like a lock for 20th Century Women. But live on the edge, friends! ACTORAdam Driver, Marriage StoryJoaquin Phoenix, Joker ACTRESSScarlett Johansson, Marriage StoryRenée Zellweger, JudySUPPORTING ACTORAl Pacino, The IrishmanBrad Pitt, Once Upon a Time in HollywoodSUPPORTING ACTRESSLaura Dern, Marriage StoryJennifer Lopez, HustlersWhat are you thinking?

Dern seems a lock.
Pitt in SA also feels the most probable imo.

I don't believe that Martin Scorsese made a 3 and 1/2 crime masterpiece (he did) where Robert De Niro is in nearly every scene and that is practically defined by its acting performances is going to be passed over. I know he's never been nodded for a previous crime film by Scorsese but.........it's all about the circumstances this year. He's a BA lock nominee to me, book it Danno!

I think you're right in that these are the only locks so far. Although I do think there's a scenario where Jennifer Lopez could miss because she's likely to be a lone nominee. It seems weird because she probably has the most raves, but if say Pugh and Shuzhen are both able to make it in, and at least one of the Jojo Rabbit actresses is nominated, that would only leave two spots for the top consensus 3 in this category Dern, Lopez, and Robbie, and Dern and Robbie would have stronger films. I think she'll get in though, but it will be similar to when Stallone, Keaton, Rourke, Murphy, and Reynolds were nominated. They had raves and a couple of them won way more critics awards than their competition, but they also had baggage that was hard for some voters to get past.

I agree with your picks exactly, Tyler ... two locks per category right now and each category feels like a two-way race between the two performers. Not suggesting it'll stay that way throughout the season, and in fact I find that quite unlikely, but that is how it feels as of late November.

ACTOR Adam Driver, Marriage Story
ACTRESS Scarlett Johansson, Marriage Story Renée Zellweger, Judy
SUPPORTING ACTOR Brad Pitt, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
SUPPORTING ACTRESS Laura Dern, Marriage Story
Removed Phoenix because of his obvious negatives (even if I probably have him as the frontrunner now), Pacino because of internal competition, and Lopez because she's a lone-nomination contender (like Morton said).

Maaaaaybe Zellweger as well because her industry icon character and biopic factor may be too strong to deny, despite the film itself not being a big player. I can see scenarios where the others miss. Most of them probably won't, but I can see it.

I believe Dern will be nominated (and maybe even win if she is, as she is overdue), but I think she's only started to feel inevitable because of the supposed weakness of the category, not because the performance itself is undeniable. If someone like Pugh or Robbie emerges as the frontrunner, I can see a Dern-inevitability train fading.
