Currently there's a handful of my favorite directors, who haven't done a movie in quite a time and for some of them there are hardly news.
Like many other folks on here I'd love to see Michael Mann do another one. There were talks about some projects, he could tackle, but somehow it never happened.
It's even longer since Peter Weir directed a film. His last work was The Way Back in 2010. In his later career he always took some time to make a new movie, but sadly now it seems, he is retired. I'd love him to come back.
For Wong Kar Wai there's at least the talk about an upcoming project titled "Blossoms", but the only news I've seen over the course of the last year is, that he will first do a TV series about this topic, which I find a pity. I'm really highly anticipating a new movie of him for his unique style alone.
Jean-Pierre Jeunet is also somebody with unique style. His last two movies were somewhat underwhelming, but with Amelie and A very long engagement he has already made me a lifelong fan. He made no film since 2014 and it somehow seems he has run out of ideas a bit. Just last week there was the information, that he would make a sci-fi film called "Big Bug". Topicwise this doesn't seem too intriguing, but if it's true that he willl reunite with Amelie-writer Guillaume Laurant, which would be great.
Kevin Costner hasn't even been in the director's seat for 15 years. That's a pity, because he surely knows how to tell a story and give it a good look. Sure, he made Postman, but I liked his two westerns a lot. Would be fun to see him tackling a totally different kind of film for once.
On a sidenote: John Carroll Lynch has only one entry as director. But I liked Lucky a lot, so I'd be interested to see if that was just a fluke or if he can come up with another good film.
What are some of your directors, who haven't done a movie in quite some time and whose next films you are highly anticipating?

David Mamet hasn't directed anything for the big screen in a long time - and for HBO which I think was the last thing he did in film in any way, since 2013. He's been writing weak plays for an awfully long time now and those plays would clearly be better suited as projects for TV/film where he could edit scenes down and re-work them visually. It's like watching someone bang their head against a wall to get free of a self-imposed prison when there's an open door right there.....

I think he's a better writer than director, but he had a very strong streak with The Spanish Prisoner, The Winslow Boy and State and Main, which I all like a lot.

I'd love it if John Carpenter, David Cronenberg and William Friedkin would direct anything again.
I'd also like to mention John Dahl, who has directed some excellent noirs through the years but hasn't made a film for a very long time.

The Mann and Coppola. I'd love to see Megalopolis from Francis.
Also I'd be very curious to see Lucas direct anything else except Star Wars. I'm a SW fan and I respect the whole saga he created but the guy hasn't done anything else since 2003. Doesn't he have the urge (artistically) to create something different??

Todd Field. Hasn't directed shit since Little Children (and that came out in 2006!).
Trey Parker. Last film he directed was Team America (which was fucking hilarious) and that came out in 2004. I know he stays busy with his South Park show but I'd kill for him to bring The Book of Mormon to the silverscreen. I think it'd be a big hit

Oh honey, Jean-Pierre Jeunet.
I recently read in an interview with him where he said it was very hard these days to get financing to make another Amelie, Delicatessen, City of Lost Children, Micmacs, style movie. So sad.
