Initial thoughts:
* I don’t know if winning the Altman award made the Marriage Story cast ineligible, but I do know Cate Blanchett was nominated in 2007 when I’m Not There. won, so if that’s a recent stipulation, that’s one thing, but very interesting that no one from the film got a solo nod.
* Hustlers overperformed and Lopez gets a healthy bump, especially with Dern out of the way.
* Shocked that Awkwafina missed, especially with The Farewell doing so well. This does not bode well for my fantasy league picks. Still, go Nai Nai!
* HAAAAAAAAAARK! The Lighthouse comes in hot.
* Very healthy showing for the Safdies and Sandler.

I remember reading it makes them ineligible when no one from Moonlight got nominated on the year they won Altman award.

Hopefully, this is not how it goes this year. These early points are nice but the real points come later.

Interesting how marriage story got no lead nods. After looking over the stats, I'm Not There. is the only film to win the Altman Award and get a singular acting nomination aside from it. I'm guessing there's a stipulation that if the film wins the Altman, it automatically rules the individual nominees out for consideration.

Yes no needless panicking over this because this is exactly what happened. They must have changed the rule after that because now if a cast wins the Altman Award, they're ineligible for individual nominations.

Ah, classic Spirits - a random nomination for "A Hidden Life" for Best Picture but not even a nod for Cinematography, "The Farewell" getting nothing for Awkwafina or its Screenplay, "The Lighthouse" getting a shitload of noms but missing the main one.

Not that she really stands a chance with the Academy, but it's nice to see Taylor Russell's name pop a few times already. She really is the MVP of Waves.

Love how random these always are. I get the snubs for Marriage Story because I assume the voters wanted to make a conscience choice to highlight unsung heroes that are probably not going to get much more acclaim this season, whereas Driver and Johansson and Dern are going to show up everywhere.
The weirdest snub for me was A Hidden Life for cinematography. You'd think that category was its best chance, but no, it gets a best film nod instead. Ok then!

Does this mean Dafoe gets to give a speech?

Does this mean Dafoe gets to give a speech? All winners should give speeches in character, especially if they're Willem Dafoe.

how do we feel about the total snubbing of Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood? Last year CYEFM nabbed two nods and won them both. This year, nothing.

Even so, according to wikipedia the budget for ABDITN is $25 million, which sounds more correct Outside of Hanks' paycheck, it didn't look like that expensive a project.

Also from Wikipedia: "The film received tax credits of approximately $9.5 million against a production budget of $45 million for filming in Pittsburgh.[4] Production wrapped on November 9, 2018."

Dude, I think you're looking at the wrong numbers for Judy and Jackie - Wikipedia has their grosses at $36 mil, not the budget. Jackie's budget is $9 million and Judy's is not stated. Plus the Spirits have a budget restriction of $22.5 mil max so A Beautiful Day wasn't eligible.

The weirdest snub for me was A Hidden Life for cinematography. You'd think that category was its best chance, but no, it gets a best film nod instead. Ok then! Yeah, I do like how in the last few years they've gone back to trying to really acknowledge smaller films that won't appear anywhere else or at least to the degree that something like Marriage Story will, but it does make for some odd things like The Lighthouse getting in everywhere but Best Film or like you mentioned A Hidden Life getting a Best Film nom but nothing else. It has a budget of $45 million, so I don't think it's eligible as an "indie." Whaaaaat about The Report? The Report should have been eligible, but I just think it's been forgotten. It's a solid movie, but I can see why it was passed over. They're already honoring Driver with Marriage Story, and they probably felt that was enough. Bening was also good, but either she wasn't on their radar, definitely possible, or they think that her path is through other mainstream awards and thought that it was better to honor some actresses who probably won't get recognized anywhere else.
