Hmh... interesting.... Imitation of Life as sad.
I know the mother vs rebellious ungrateful child against the torrent of society the story can make you sad, but it's so... fake-y. For the record, sometimes fake is good. In this case, Sirk mastered the art of being fake. Imitation is probably my favorite from him, and the only one of his films that's a top classic.
Personally, Casablanca and Heaven Can Wait (1943) are the only two that felt a different kind of sad to me. Though my mom is partial to Bridges of Madison County like some of you guys. My dad.... I believe finds Titanic sad, or at least that Celine Dion song is his non-stop #1 play track - it's probably the song he goes to sleep with.
