Given all that happens in the final act I really don't see how anyone could think it's a "Ford commercial". I didn't come away from the movie with a high opinion of them at all. Maybe I could clarify that a bit... Like I said in my post, the film is very clearly not an endorsement of Ford as a company, but it still does feel like an endorsement of Ford's products. Hell, the film is kind of just a showcase for them. And I think I read somewhere that Ford was actually displeased with the film do to how it depicted Henry Ford II and that other asshole, which is interesting to me because, despite the fact that the film vilifies their business practices, it's still ultimately a positive showcase of their products to the extent that to me it felt like something that Ford would've subsidized. There's a scene where Jon Bernthal is talking about how people will buy Ford cars again if they think driving a Ford will make them "feel like a champ," and that's exactly what this film achieves. I can see a lot of people leaving this film wanting to buy a Ford. And then there's also moments like the scene where Henry Ford II talks about how Ford products won WWII for the U.S., etc. that are still very positive in tone and intent towards Ford. It's what I mean when I said it's a film that's trying to deceive you into thinking it's anti-capitalist ... yes, it does critique this mega corporation, but at the same time it is trying to sell the products they make back to you ... it's the type of shit that Disney keeps pulling in a lot of their recent films, too. Obviously this isn't nearly an egregious example as that is, but it's still using the same mechanisms, or at least that's the impression it left me with.

The Marketing/corporate guys probably actually do talk like that. What characters say doesn't necessarily equate to the filmmakers talking to the audience. I don't think it's anti-capitalist either but I don't think it even looks anti-capitalist or was trying to be. It's more about authenticity which is why the "suits" come off badly.

The first 90 minutes of this didn't work for me at all. It's all covered in this horribly artificial sheen of Hollywood crowd-please right down to the color scheme, and not a single moment in this entire stretch comes across as genuine or real. Even the bits with Miles and his kid are ruined by intrusive, manipulative music that takes me right out of what are supposed to be the most emotionally resonant bits in the whole movie. For a while there I was ready to say that Mollie was the only character that felt like a convincing human being and not an exposition dispenser, but then that fucking scene of her and Miles on the road happened and sank her down too. So that left me with a total of zero believable performances, with all of them ranging from horrendously phony to "I've seen this exact person give this exact performance to much better results elsewhere". I get why Bale's work is getting praised but I found his relentless mugging exhausting from the very first time he showed up; all loudness and affectation without an ounce of truth to it. As for Damon, I've long believed that he's entirely dependent on the quality of the material he's given, and that's exactly why he never rises above what he's given here. They couldn't possibly have picked a less interesting pair A-listers to headline this; one sleepwalks his way through it, the other actively makes his scenes a pain to watch. ...And then comes the Le Mans sequence, which is some of the most riveting and brilliantly executed action of the past few years. It jolts the film to life so intensely that all of my complaints about the first hour and a half completely evaporated. Watching it in IMAX made the first acts worth it, simply to witness the flawless editing and sound design in the best possible conditions. So yeah, that's where I am with it. It's terrible and great, but luckily it's both those things in that order and not the opposite, meaning the good mostly outweighs the bad in my memory.

I thought I was the only one that disapproved of the two leads in the film. My two guys were Caviezel as Shelby & Bana as Miles. Then again, the budget would have been less & the final product also would have been different. Overall, it is a very enjoyable film. Plus, the soundtrack is so great & keeps the tone of the film.

I liked this quite a lot, just for the fantastic racing scenes alone. That camerawork and editing really gives you the feeling of being close to the race and making this scenes extremely vivid. Also this is one of the very few Christian Bale performances, probably only the second one after The Fighter, that I'd give the attribute "great" to - or at least nearly great. I was far less impressed with Matt Damon, who was basically just there, despite being actually the guy, who beat Ferrari at Le Mans. It's a role a writer can't do much with, so it was understandable the focus was on Miles, but an actor should. I liked the development of the characters fine enough, but still the whole background story of Miles didn't mix up well with the main part of the film. Of course they had to try to include his family, cause it would have made the whole construct more interesting, but those parts and the ones dedicated to the construction of the new super car bit each other, also hindered by some uninspired, dull dialogues. I thought that especially the scene with Miles and his wife in the car was totally misplaced and didn't work at all. Still a strong, gripping film overall.

Liked this way more than I was expecting to,nothing groundbreaking about it,it was just pure entertainment.I was psyched to hear Bale talking in a Midlands accent too,that's my neck of the woods,and he absolutely nailed it.Matt Damon was pretty great in it as well,loved his southern accent.

What a movie!!! Great performances, plot and dialogue and of course perfect sound!! Didn't know the story of the two main characters beforehand so I was in for many surprises! One of the best of the year. 8.5/10Bale's performance? Thoughts on his *deserving a nom if he does manage to get in tomorrow?

He gave a powerful peeformance, maybe his best since the Fighter. I don't see him getting in but if he does, I'm totally ok with it.

I don't have anything to say about your comment. But upon spying your avatar: As for the movie itself... well, it is what it is. And quite good at it. There is not one unexpected note in the movie, but it succeeds at everything it tries to do, save for some of the stuff with Ken's family that felt like typical "make him sympathetic" filler. The Le Mans sequence is not amazing, but very, very good. So yeah, it's a good film.
