Who's the better actress?
I feel like Robbie is slowly but surely claiming J. Law's mantle as Hollywood's go-to (young white) leading lady. I also don't think it's up for debate that Robbie has been making much savvier choices as of late, and actually seems to be stretching herself as an actress. I know J. Law took a huge swing with mother! but aside from that, it feels like the better part of a decade has gone by since she turned in anything worthwhile.
tl;dr Lawrence's peaks are probaly a bit higher but she's also sunk to more embarrassing lows.

I think it really just comes down to personal preference as to who's more talented (I think Robbie is more technically skilled - accents, etc., but Lawrence certainly has innate talent).
I personally prefer Robbie.

I think Jennifer is more naturally talented but Margot has been far savvier when it comes to her career, setting up a production company etc,she seems much more in control of her own destiny.

Blef. I think there are too young and their career too short for choosing one. As I I predicted several years ago, in her late twenties Lawrence would be semiretired, like most of Hollywood young stars. The pression of being on top several years was to much for her.- Robbie started later, I haven't seen Tonya, so her most impressive work was in TWOWS where she is just OK.- I don't like her in Tarzan, and not loved her in the Will Smith movie.-

Yeah, I think Lawrence is more naturally talented, but that's only going to get you so far. Robbie is showing more ambition and seems to be doing better work recently. All that said, I think Ronan is the best actress of their generation.

Hailee Steinfeld is the most talented actress of this generation in my eyes at least.

Lawrence absolutely demolishes Robbie in terms of pure natural talent and peaks. Lawrence needs to be much more daring and take greater risks, as well as to avoid the pitfalls of the last half-decade that have plagued her. She could do with a DDL-esque sabbatical and rework her craft and return to those more naturalistic roles.
Robbie's done very well for herself of late, but I don't think she's on the level of Lawrence or Stone or Ronan yet. But she's getting there.

To me it's clearly Robbie. Lawrence has a good dramatic performance under her belt in Winter's Bone and is funny and has screen presence, but I think Robbie's best work is very far ahead of hers. Lawrence can also be terrible sometimes and lay an egg. So Robbie has her beat on both peak and consistency in my opinion. Neither of them can touch Saoirse, though.

I voted for Lawrence. She is more talented dramatically while comedic wise they're both on the same level. That said Robbie is more consistent these days and i think she is only getting better.

nothing Robbie has done has come close to J-Law's highs. There's Winter's Bone, then Silver Linings, then a mountain of other performances before we can even begin to think about mentioning Wolf of Wall Street or I Tonya or Mary Queen of Scots.

If SLP is one of Lawrence’s highs, then Robbie doesn’t have much to worry about.

Just a bump to see if the wind's blowing in a different direction now. Not much has really changed for me on this from when I last commented on it. Robbie's advancing very nicely with her recent projects and she's got some promising work in the wings, but I do think we could be on the eve of a Lawrence rebound. I definitely think that Robbie's ambition is something to behold, though. That is going to serve her immensely in the coming years.

Law is an immediate star and a great actress.... Robbie is on her way but neither totally yet, she doesn't command the screen or surprise like Law, but she's been very good a few times and I like how hands-on she is as a producer....

Lawrence is interesting in that I think she had a spark to her early career from being untrained. She could surprise in ways that were really refreshing even if the role read flat (though I personally feel such surprises backfired in something like American Hustle). I don't know if it is a matter of her status rising too fast that led to more self-consciousness or a simple byproduct of accumulating years in the industry, but I don't see that same kind of spark or surprise in her work anymore which can leave her dead on the screen in stuff like Passengers or her latter Hunger Games/X-Men work. Even decent work like Red Sparrow or mother! feel very much like the performance you envision from a first read of the script. Hoping her upcoming work brings back more of that spark.
Meanwhile Robbie, while not being as surprising in her work, has a much deeper toolbox with which to color her performances and make them come alive. So her flat roles like Mary Queen of Scots or Bombshell can still be quite effective and she can rise to the occasion when presented a more interesting character like with I, Tonya. So I'll take Robbie for now.

I guess I never really got the Lawrence thing. In Winter's Bone, I thought she did well in that crying scene in the garage or whatever, but mostly what I took away was John Hawkes' excellent and intense performance. In SLP, I thought many of her line readings were cringy and artificial, so I much preferred Cooper and De Niro's work there. Hustle, I liked her in, but thought Bale the standout; Adams was pretty bad IMO. So basically, I've never watched a J-Law movie and been taken by her acting.

Margot Robbie in both looks & talent. I really do dig J Law as an actress in quite a bit of stuff thru the years. Her best performance still remains Winter's Bone. However, that was over 10 years ago. And she was pretty bland as Mystique in those X Men films (she seemed like she didn't even want to be there in the last 2 X Men films she was in ) She was perfectly cast in The Hunger Games though. I can't picture any other young actress as Katniss Everdeen. Margot Robbie has been killing it lately (I still wish she was given a lot more dialogue in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Just thought Tarantino underutilized her which resulted in a missed opportunity by Tarantino. Oh well) . She was great in I, Tonya and imo her most underrated role is in Z for Zachariah).
