We are six episodes deep into Godfather Of Harlem, and the fact that this outstanding period crime epic hasn't even got an active thread here is a shame, but maybe also a testament to the strength in depth of Peak Television. There's simply so much good shit out there. Even great stuff like this can go unnoticed if it isn't on one of the bigger streaming platforms and networks. This show is on Epix. GOH is a exceptional show that weaves real life history with Hollywood contrivance to create a captivating narrative. Most of the main characters were real people that actually existed. It deals with gangs and criminality, but also heavily the civil rights movement of the 1960's. The series follows African-American Harlem gangster Bumpy Johnson (played by a magnetic lead in Forest Whitaker) as he co-exists and wars with the Italian- American mafia. His main nemesis is a mob capo played by Vincent D'Onofrio. We have Giancarlo Esposito playing Adam Clayton Powell jr, rounding off a trio of some of the best character actors of their generations dominating this gangster series. We have actors playing Malcom X, and even in one episode Muhammed Ali. For my money, Esposito is stealing the show, but everyone here is coming to play.
It's a terrific show, and hopefully it gets another season.

Never heard of it. It has one hell of a cast. Yep! Incredible cast, and the acting is impeccable, and not just from the powerhouses we know. Great performances from everyone, even from the actors you've never heard of and younger cast members. I think if this was a HBO or Netflix show, everyone would be talking about it. Epix just hasn't got that kind of clout yet. But Godfather Of Harlem is the type of show that will get them clout. I can see it's following growing in further seasons, as long as the quality level doesn't dip . But yeah, highly recommended. It's got a bit of Scorsese about it as well stylisticaly. And Chazz Palminteri, Paul Sorvino and Luis Guzman also have big roles in the series.

I'll definitely start watching this series to get caught up. Wonder how the awareness of this show would've been with an HBO or Showtime behind it. Kind of surprised with this stellar cast, it didn't even get on Netflix's radar. Like you said though, there is a whole lot of competition for viewers now, not just Peak TV but sports, etc.

I've been watching it. I'm a fan so far. Strong work from Whitaker and D'Onofrio (and Esposito). You're right that if this was on Showtime or HBO, far more discussion would be going on about it. I also found EPIX's Pennyworth very underrated as well.

There is a very great - and honest - film to be made about the true African American crime experience and the connection between Bumpy Johnson, and later Nicky Barnes, Frank Lucas, and Frank Mathews and the Italian mob. This show sort of touches on that greater story but in a way that simultaneously fascinates and disappoints.
The writing in this show pivots on things that do not make sense in a way that rings false on even the simplest crime level - people are killed who if they died then would lead to greater repercussions than play out here. The Sopranos upped the ante on this kind of stuff in such a way that this no longer flies - it doesn't add up.
What's worse, the shows dialog is done in bursts of short, staccato rhythms that can lead to every character talking in speeches which makes it seem amateurish.....but the acting transcends that. A pretty entertaining show nonetheless that so far has the acting running ahead of the pace of all other elements.

Finally got caught up on the first season of this and found it pretty enjoyable with some really great acting. Definitely a few questionable story choices but still very entertaining nevertheless.

Epix needs to swallow it's pride and license this show to stream on Netflix or something. I think it could pick up a pretty massive following if the first season was dropped on that platform. Lesser shows than this clean up at the Emmys and various award shows because they are on the "right" broadcaster or streamer. This should be crushing at the acting awards as well.
Season 2 just started a few weeks ago, so will be starting that soon
