The guy's almost 80... He's probably enjoying his elder years. Also what more does he have to prove? He's made some really great films like Carrie, Blow Out, Body Double, Untouchables, Carlito's Way, etc.

He refused to evolve with the times and kept hammering home the same schlocky formula over and over again. He's a director of some key talents but adaptiveness is not one of them.

can't wait for another terrible thread
i'd say he's made most of his best work in this millennium. always been pretty campy, but goes in more interesting directions thesedays now that he's all but shaken the "serious auteur" label that was mis-bestowed on him. Redacted and Femme Fatale are pretty incredible works and don't feel like a late director trying to reclaim their younger days, they just feel like young people movies.
the 10s work i've seen from him is rather spotty, but i think he's been studio'd particularly hard now that his 00s work didn't make much money

I don't think he's ever been a truly great director. He has some terrific stylistic instincts, but he almost always overdoes it to the point of campy ridiculousness. It frustrates me, because I think of something like The Black Dahlia, where he evinces some of the strongest noir filmmaking any director has ever displayed in terms of craft, and even has a stroke of fucking genius in casting Mia Kirshner on the spot in the part of the title character, who originally was never supposed to be seen alive on screen. But then he tanks it by veering so hard into camp territory, and rather than casting Kirshner in the doppelgänger role as well, he winds up trying to convince us Hilary Swank is a dead ringer for her? Ridiculous.
Carrie is a near-masterpiece, but I think it was simply the perfect marriage of sensibilities and source material. He also has very watchable (if not necessarily great) movies in his canon, but he's also got a fair amount of garbage as well clogging up the pipes.

It's pretty simple... he hates the studio system and refuses to play ball with them... and as a result he either can't get financing, or gets financing and gets screwed over by crappy producers.
He's one of the absolute GOATs btw.

haven't caught up to domino yet, but I think he's done some of his finest work from 2000 to present. femme fatale and passion are particular faves. and I even have a soft spot for his last big Hollywood movie, mission to mars.

Interesting. I found Femme Fatale incredibly poor. I was amused by what I saw of McAdams in Passion, but I can't say I was compelled to finish the movie.
