I used to say on the old IMDB boards that American audiences have never really understood tragedy and certainly - there are very few American tragedies in our movies anyway.
The difference between tragedy and something just being you know, just fncking depressing, is that after you see a fully realized tragic work you just nod your head and say "Yeah, that's how it is"
My favorite scene is when Gittes is in Yelburton's office, alone, snooping. How long do you think an audience today would stand for that scene - which lasts a fairly long time - with nothing really happening (but of course that isn't true is it?)........ How many people would get the cruel, heartbreaking joke of Gittes humming "The Way You Look Tonight" (which doesn't hit us until much later)?
...........and that's how it is.
