Bizarre plot... going from revenge on a colonel to the World Series of Poker?
But might be good... idk. Wish he was doing Nine Men from Now though.

I like Schrader but the plot seems very weird...

Sounds like something from The Coens.

Kinda liking the Hard Eight/Sidney vibe going on, but this might be lesser Schrader.

He posted this yesterday on his Facebook:
"THE CARD COUNTER. OK,yes. I'm hoping to shoot this film next Feb with Oscar Issac. In this competitive social media environment it's hard to hew to one's preferred media timetable. We weren't ready to announce the film but there it is. It's another character study. A man in a room, in a mask, waiting for something to happen."
He also a few days ago posted high praise for (gambling pic) Uncut Gems and related it to Toback....
wonder what happened to Nine Men from Now.... I assumed he was waiting for Hawke instead of recasting but maybe financing never came together....

Tiffany Haddish in a Paul Schrader movie is something I'd never thought I'd see, but I'm down.

people will be surprised by the Haddish casting but I'm really intrigued. Assuming the film takes a darker more dramatic tone, it'll be really interesting to see how she works in those boundaries, and alongside such amazing co-stars!

Isaac needs this to land well. Like desperately.
Anyone else think Adam Driver is basically living out the career that Isaac was supposed to have?

Isaac needs this to land well. Like desperately. Anyone else think Adam Driver is basically living out the career that Isaac was supposed to have? I think they're both talented, but yeah I did expect after Inside Llewyn Davis that Oscar Isaac would get an Oscar nomination first. Then came The Force Awakens, and just from the first teaser, I thought that Isaac had a more important role than he did. I mean he did get to do some stuff in The Last Jedi, and even more stuff in The Rise of Skywalker, but the whole Holdo vs. Poe stuff turned out to be a landmine almost as much as the Canto Bight section among fans. With TROS while he probably came out the best after Driver, the movie still sucked, so it doesn't matter I think that he got more screentime in it. Right after TFA though, Driver's career just skyrocketed, and he has very few misses. Even stuff like The Man Who Killed Don Quixote and The Dead Don't Die seem like minor misses because they're pretty small films, and I think they can be excused for Driver obviously wanting to work with the Gilliam and with Jarmusch again. On the other hand, Isaac had a big flop with Life Itself, although to be fair I could see why it would seem appealing to him, and Suburbicon, The Promise, and Operation Finale didn't do well either. Dune seems very promising for Isaac; although not sure how big his role will end up being, and at least The Addams Family was a hit for him, so hopefully he's turning things around. After reading someone's review of The Card Counter's screenplay, I fear that this might be another miss for Isaac. He'll probably be great, and but I'm very worried about Haddish. I think that she does have at least one excellent dramatic performance in her, but I don't know that The Card Counter will be it. Before The Kitchen, I thought maybe she would surprise in a good way, but then after seeing it, I feel that she needs a really strong director, and the right role. I'm not sure that she'll have either with The Card Counter though.

I'm not sure that she'll have either with The Card Counter though. It really feels like X-Men Apocalypse, all but killed Isaac's momentum, and his ability to pick good scripts. Before that he seemed almost destined to eventually get an Oscar nomination. I too hope he ran recover, and that The Card Counter is that very good, but if recent Paul Schrader is anything to go by, it's more likely to be another The Walker then a First Reformed. The fact that you read the script, and it apparently doesn't sound so promising, isn't great. I also agree about Tiffany Haddish. I get that she wants to be taking more seriously, and she's basking in the ability to act in whatever she wants, but I think she really needs to be more careful with her projects. Nearly everything she's done post Girls Trip seems to have turned out poorly.

Schrader posted to his Facebook last night: "On set." Is this the only production we know that hasn't shut down? It's filming in Mississippi which doesn't have more than a few cv cases...

WOAAAHHHHHHHH they need o tone down the makeup on Isaac.
Might be a trick of the light, but his face is like 5 shades darker than his neck/hand.
