Who do you prefer? Close call for me, but I currently give the edge to Park Chan-wook. They both have 3 masterpieces by my estimation, but Oldboy is the best film between the two of em imo. And Okja is the worst.

I've seen four Park films: JSA, Oldboy, Stoker (all are 7/10) and The Handmaiden (6.5/10).
Five Bong ones for me: Memories of Murder (7/10), The Host (4.5/10) and then Snowpiercer, Okja and Parasite (the three of them are 7.5/10).
So Bong by default. Both are solid filmmakers but I just can't fully connect with acclaimed Korean cinema. The Grand-Guignol thing many of them seem to share doesn't really strike me as all that impressive, I appreciate their style but do not find it fully amazing in either case and the sense of humor is not entirely my cup of tea. That being said, the originality is certainly there and the energy is something that I do respond to. I just wish I was more into the offbeatness of them which bizarrely seems predictable to me.

Oldboy and Memories of Murder are flat-out masterpieces imo and Oldboy is an all time favorite film of mine - two of the world's greatest filmmakers, I'd see anything they do these days.....Park for me, because he's quite mad in the best sense of that word....

In terms of directorial verve and a singular sense of "vision," I'd give the edge to Park. But Bong runs a mighty close race and I think he's got the best two films out of both filmmakers' canon (Parasite and Memories of Murder).

Both are usually pretty great, but I'm a sucker for Park's visuals.

Love them both, and for me they're two of the defining guys of the 21st century so far. I do think Bong has had an infinitely better transition into English language cinema, but beyond that I would probably still give the very slightest edge to Park.

It's Bong for me.
I've seen 4 of his films and two are really great (Memories of Murder, which is probably the best of their combined filmographies, and Parasite). And I also liked Mother and Snowpiercer.
As for Park I've seen 6 of his works. "I'm a Cyborg, but that's okay" is the one that stands out for me of his canon and "Oldboy" and "JSA" are very good as well. But I didn't care for "Thirst" and the two other films of his vengeance trilogy are utterly disappointing and stagy in a bad way.

Which of these South Korean auteurs do you personally prefer?
Edit: I truly enjoy both, but The Handmaiden is my favorite film between the two, so I went with Park.

Park
Jong is so overrated. He's only this popular because BTS and Blackpink and the rise of Korean culture rose when he came on while it was still a bit muted when Park was in his heyday. Stop the hyping, plebs.

I think Park's the better director, but Bong makes better movies.

Both great but Park makes singular movies that another person couldn't actually copy - his directorial vision is off the charts - I think Park may have made some of Bong's movies........well not "better" exactly - but weirder, more idiosyncratic and fascinating. I used to say this in the IMDB days - you will always have a ton of people who want you to love their movies (Spielberg, etc.), and you will have people who push your buttons to upset you to hate their movies (Von Trier, etc.).......but Park is like De Palma in the best sense - he wants you to love to hate or hate to love his movies. You can really see it in Park's short movies actually - Bong is amazing but he would never make "Cut" - no one else would ever make "Cut"

I'm not sure I enjoy any of Park's movies as much as I do Memories of Murder and Parasite, but I do think I prefer Park's body of work overall, and I think he's generally more exciting behind the camera.

Seen 3 from each so far, and Parasite pushes Bong over the edge. I'd rank the 6 films:
1. Parasite 2. Oldboy 3. Snowpiercer 4. Decision to Leave 5. Stoker 6. Okja

Um... this post aged like milk so let me update it: I've seen 9 Park films: 1. Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance - 8.5 2. Oldboy - 8 3. Sympathy for Lady Vengeance - 8 4. Thirst - 7.5 5. Stoker - 7.5 6. JSA - 7.5 7. I’m a Cyborg, But That’s OK - 7 8. Decision to Leave - 7 9. The Handmaiden - 6.5 6 Bong ones for me: 1. Memories of Murder - 9 2. Parasite - 9 3. Mother - 8 4. Snowpiercer - 7.5 5. Okja - 7 6. The Host - 7 I feel more of a pull towards Bong but Park is also a wonderful filmmaker. Acclaimed Korean cinema is terrific. The Grand-Guignol vibe you can sometimes find in big Korean successes strikes me as very entertaining. I love both Park's and Bong's style as well as their sense of humor - it's quite my cup of tea! The originality is certainly there too and the energy of their films is also something that I respond to. I'm pretty into the offbeatness of them. Not always but often enough.

2019: Parasite 2017: Okja 2013: Snowpiercer 2009: Mother 2008: Shaking Tokyo segment 2006: The Host 2003: Memories of Murder 2000: Barking Dogs Never Bite 1994: Incoherence (30m)
2022: Decision to Leave 2018: Little Drummer Girl 2016: The Handmaiden 2013: Stoker 2009: Thirst 2006: I’m a Cyborg 2005: Lady Vengeance 2004: Cut segment 2003: Oldboy 2002: Mr Vengeance 2000: Joint Security Area 1999: Judgment (30m)
For easy viewing, their films! plus some shorts (not all of them) to further point out.....
How astonishingly close their careers overlap.
Breakout pics in 2000..... but Park's is culturally important, a huge hit. 2003 their masterpieces. '06 their sci-fis (The Host a fav of mine; Cyborg the only movie btwn them I haven't seen). '09 more great work - pushing, subverting genres. 2013 English language debuts (Stoker my style; Snowpiercer is not.... no longer even, we tilt to Park).... then streaming-era co-productions w/ Netflix, AMC/BBC (Little Drummer Girl again closer to my taste; Okja not).... except Park sneaks in another masterwork before that with The Handmaiden. At this point he furthers his lead on Bong....... who returns with a sensation, partial masterwork Parasite.... it's enough to keep him in the game. Ball is in Park's park and now we have Decision to Leave... not the expected homer but a triple-double, another sconce illuminating his intricate directorial skills, somewhat cloudy script that doesn't lessen Bong's case as the better writer. Filmmaker? It's Park.
Generally prefer? Park..... but I loveee both, and I love Bong's humor. Also deserving of mention here: Kim Jee-woon. Same breakout phase, '03 masterpiece, '13 Eng-language, etc, etc.

Only doubling down on this now having seen Decision to Leave - which I might place over one if not both of those Bong films - time will tell.

Ranking what I've seen from both:
1. Parasite - 10 2. Memories of Murder 3. The Handmaiden - 9 4. Oldboy 5. Mother - 7 6. Decision to Leave 7. Snowpiercer - 6 8. Okja 9. Stoker
Both have middling works to their name, but even then their style and exuberance is on clear display. I agree with others that Park is often the more exciting director visually, but Bong's masterpieces, where he is just in total command of his craft, give him the edge for me.

Park Chan-Wook for me. Stoker sucked ass, but The Handmaiden is the best film either of them have made, and The Little Drummer Girl was an impressive series. I thought Oldboy sucked, Parasite decent but one of the most overrated films of the past 50 years, Okja lousy, Memories of Murder tonal whiplash and ultimately silly (I've always found the comparisons to Zodiac very insulting and outrageous), and Snowpiercer good.

Am I misreading this, or do you think Bong directed Oldboy?? You got me. Not sure why I lumped that in there. PCW has directed multiple films I dislike, but I still like him more than Bong. I like Spike Lee's Oldboy more than PCW's.
