It's out today on Netflix, so thought I should create a thread for us to trash-talk this utter piece of garbage. One of the worst movies I've seen in years, can't really save anything.

Oh god, I have this queued up and was planning on it tonight. Then again, I wasn't a fan of Unsane or High Flying Bird for that matter, either... so this isn't terribly surprising.

I quite liked Unsane as popcorn fun, and though HFB to be harmless if boring. But this one... it makes Deadpool look like Bergman.

Soderbergh should've stayed retired. Or at least done the third season of The Knick.

A nice little movie in the tradition of Adam McKay's Vice and The Big Short. This mixed with the unique style of Steven Soderbergh results in a quirky and entertaining movie about a rather boring topic. Its informative, funny, a bit sad at times and always extremely well acted. The most outstanding performance came from Meryl Streep who really surprises ( I am not saying too much here) and really links her unique humour with many deep moments. A really great performance, but who would have expected differently? Gary Oldman was also great. One of his funniest performances ever, never thought he had it in, Obviously Oldman had a lot of fun playing this role and it showed. Same goes to Antonio Banderas who also shines as Oldman's partner. Them breaking the fourth wall was sometimes a bit irritating but you got used to it very quickly. Another noteworthy performance was by Nonso Anzonie who was fantastic. Wished there had been more of Sharon Stone , I really enjoyed her cameo and character. Also Jeffrey Wright, almost unrecognizable, had some really memorable moments. The screenplay was really very well written and I really liked Steven Soderbergh's direction on this. He really managed to make such a dry topic entertaining. The only thing I really did not like too much was the very ending of it. Other than that it is a very good film and one of this years Netflix best.
Curent Nominations for:
Best Direction: Steven Soderbergh Best Actor in a Supporting Role: Gary Oldman Best Actress in a Supporting Role: Meryl Streep Best Adapter Screenplay Best Editing Best Ensemble
Rating: 8/10

It's out today on Netflix, so thought I should create a thread for us to trash-talk this utter piece of garbage. One of the worst movies I've seen in years, can't really save anything. This is a stupendous failure across the board - for about the first half it's playful, silly, Altmanesque - not great but ok - and then the horrifying "Simone/Astrid" scene happens....a mind-blowing and long scene of poorly written, facile, borderline racist (and at the end appallingly and condescendingly "pro-feminist" in the worst sense BS). From this point on it's a total (and tonal) mess .....4/10 - not my worst of the year (The Perfection, Fanatic) but for a film with this pedigree you'd be hard pressed to imagine a less satisfying one.

What an absolute garbage!!!
Started fine and I really enjoyed the first half an hour (the Meryl Streep story). And then it collapsed!! Stupid script, random stories throughout, a really really bad decision from Soderbergh and the screen writer to take the story of the Panama papers and turn it into a comady (or at least a feel good movie), an ending scene with a wtf twist (is this even considered a twist?), Meryl pretending to be the statue of liberty, Oldman and Banderas failing to be funny and his accents being totally ridiculous...
What a waste of time and talent!! Never thought Soderbergh could make such a crap film. Especially with that kind of cast.
I'm in a good mood today so I'll give it a very high 5/10...

Man this was a piss poor film. The cast all did a fine job, but actors have their limits, and some shite can't be elevated. I've rarely seen such an unmitigated mess of a film.
I've never been much of a Soderbergh fan, and films like this are all the vindication I need. 3/10

To those who've seen it, is it closer to The Informant! or Vice/The Big Short? Because lately all I've been hearing are unflattering Mckay comparisons but I can't help but remember that The Informant was pretty divisive too and I quite enjoyed that.

It did have quite a lot of similarities to The Big Short, in that it used a lot of third wall breaking as a tool to explain what was going on. The difference is, The Big Short used that tool sparingly, and even charmingly, whereas as this film uses it way too much, and to the point where it makes the rest of the film an incoherent mess.

It's a mess, but mostly an entertaining mess. And it's obviously waaaaaaay better than The Big Shit.
Most of the stuff with Streep is good, most of the stuff with Oldman/Banderas (when they're not breaking the fourth wall -- though I did like the camera redirection part) is good... and my favorite part was actually the mini-movie about the guy having an affair with his daughter's roommate. Oldman and Streep are both nearly great too...
I'm not gonna argue with the complaints though (except someone above calling it a "feel good movie" -- ummmmm.... maybe if you watched this on mute with your eyes closed)... a lot of it doesn't work, aaaaand is it really even a comedy? I might have laughed like 3 times... and I honestly couldn't really tell when it was trying to be funny for the most part.
I thought Soderbergh would have some sort of creative rejuvenation after the 20 hour masterpiece THE KNICK... but with the exception of Logan Lucky, he's been working with laaaaaame scripts. Let's hope the next one with Streep is more... straightforward?
6.5/10

6ish/10. An overloaded attempted-satire, it’s swiftly, brightly told, breaking cinematic rules and with a great cast so it’s at least entertaining ish while it self-destructs. They found some neat locations, and the actors are alright - Oldman got some laughs from me and Streep has automatic patter with Cromwell, Stone, etc. But this effort from Soderbergh feels misguided as the creased tone and scattering of characters ultimately diminishes its depth and staying power.

Absolutely vile. Meryl, just retire. I thought she was one of the very few things about it that didn't suck. In fact, she was probably the only thing about it, that was quite good, with the rest of the cast all being serviceable.
