I know it's hard to judge solely by a trailer, but this looks like it might be an overly polished, dime-a-dozen tech showreel, with none of the earnest sentimentality or gritty authenticity that made Band of Brothers or The Pacific fitting tributes to the Greatest Generation. Would love to be wrong tho.

You know, the real question is whether or not they'll be able to match these two epic fucking bad boys. Good luck, guys. You really should visit the National WWII Museum in New Orleans - I went once and really enjoyed it - Stephen Ambrose, Spielberg, and Tom Hanks were all instrumental in its inception. They still e-mail me - I'll forward one of the discount coupons to you next time I get one!

definitely missing the grit of its predecessors and feels too glossy and over-produced, but the trailers are also kinda making it look like a generic war movie too. Like no one saw the trailer to Midway and thought "I want 9 episodes of that", but that's what this is feeling like. HBO handing it off to Apple was a red flag.

HBO handing it off to Apple was a red flag. Hopefully that was just a cost thing. HBO saves all their money for dragons now, and everyone else can get fucked. Apple has a decent track record too... Fingers crossed.

Two episodes in and it's quite solid. I wouldn't put it on the vaunted level of Band of Brothers or The Pacific as of yet, but we'll see. The production quality is very impressive with the battle scenes (there's one shot of a guy who gets his face blown apart by a Luftwaffe bullet and it shocked me how visceral it was, even for this material). I would say my favourite performance in the piece thus far is Anthony Boyle as the airsick navigator Harry Crosby, but everyone's pretty good thus far.

The flying mission/battle scenes are pretty fantastic. The character scenes between battles are pretty uninteresting. Definitely a few tiers below Band of Brother and The Pacific but still a solid enough watch.
