Gemini Man numbers are predictably poor, but Joker looks to have a fantastic second weekend drop. Holy mackerel. The movie's a proper huge hit. After seeing it I was ready to say that it wasn't really the Academy's cup of tea but seeing this enormous success and support...I guess it could have a stronger showing during the awards season than I expected. There's real love around it.

A few years ago, when WB announced a solo Joker origin film with Todd Phillips, everyone laughed. Well, no one's laughing now.

I'm surprised Joker has such great legs. I know it's a big property but I didn't really think this was a audience friendly movie when I saw it. I guess in some rare cases audiences can recognize quality even if in this instance a lot of critics can't.

I guess in some rare cases audiences can recognize quality even if in this instance a lot of critics can't. Joker is the most iconic comic book villain in history. It's a property that would be huge no matter how downbeat the actual film. As long as you have Joker acting like Joker, it's a pretty easy sell. Also, to the average movie goer, this Joker probably looks like an extension of Heath Ledger's turn in The Dark Knight, and that was a billion dollar + grosser. That's a lot of potential viewers who want something similar in their Joker (who might have expected that in Suicide Squad, only to get something different). And audiences don't always listen to critics. Look at Venom. Or Suicide Squad. More obviously commercial films, but still.

Not necessarily surprised by the huge opening, but to have such a small drop obviously people really like the movie and are seeing it multiple times, which I would not have expected.

Fantastic for Joker. Dropping less then 50% is nothing short of extraordinary, plus it broke the record for the best second weekend for a film in October, beating Gravity. 370m is in play. www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/?yr=2019&wknd=41&p=.htm1 1 Joker (2019) WB $55,000,000 -42.8% 4,374 - $12,574 $192,728,787 $55 2 2 N The Addams Family (2019) UAR $30,298,000 - 4,007 - $7,561 $30,298,000 - 1 3 N Gemini Man Par. $20,500,000 - 3,642 - $5,629 $20,500,000 $138 1 4 2 Abominable Uni. $6,170,000 -48.2% 3,496 -752 $1,765 $47,971,350 $75 3 5 3 Downton Abbey Focus $4,900,000 -38.7% 3,019 -529 $1,623 $82,687,590 - 4 6 4 Hustlers STX $3,850,000 -39.8% 2,357 -673 $1,633 $98,015,339 $20 5 7 6 Judy RAtt. $3,255,353 -29.2% 1,627 +169 $2,001 $14,974,204 - 3 8 5 It: Chapter Two WB (NL) $3,225,000 -39.4% 2,303 -860 $1,400 $207,135,424 - 6 9 N Jexi LGF $3,100,000 - 2,332 - $1,329 $3,100,000 - 1 10 7 Ad Astra Fox $1,947,000 -53.5% 1,678 -1,232 $1,160 $47,035,432 - 4

Joker's international numbers are even crazier. Yeah, it polarized American critics but it's pretty much a lovefest in Europe. Winning Gold Lion plus the popular acclaim makes this look safe for a BP nod.
