Who's gonna face the music, folks?
Obviously it's a bit tough to predict this particular category without actually knowing what some scores are actually gonna be like but let's give it a shot anyway!
- Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, John Williams - Williams's final entry in the SW world seems like a sure bet. He's received nominations for the other two parts of the new trilogy and I don't see any reason to doubt him this time. - 1917, Thomas Newman - Ah, Thomas. Always the bridesmaid. Maybe this time will be it for him? I'm not exactly sure whether the type of film they're doing really lends itself to a score that would finally win Newman the Oscar but that's just pure speculation on my part. Who knows, maybe it's gonna be the work of a lifetime. So far Newman has done his very best work for Mendes so I hope that he requested another great work from Newman this time too. - A Hidden Life, James Newton Howard - The score has been singled out rather often in reactions and reviews and if the film gets some proper campaign support I can see JNH finally returning to the Oscars. - Marriage Story, Randy Newman - Again, the score has received praise, they quite like Newman and the film is gonna be big. If the score is used prominently enough it should be in. Although previous Baumbach movies haven't really relied on score that much. - Little Women, Alexandre Desplat - It's Desplat, it's "Little Women"...it's definitely gonna be a very Academy Award friendly score.
After seeing the film, I think this category is the one where "Joker" has the best shot outside of Best Actor. The score is very prominent, it's memorable and it adds to the emotional landscape of the film in a big way. I'm not predicting it as of yet but I think it's got a good shot.

Man, I don't even know at this point:

Btw, I think Thomas Newman has already done a great score this year for the rather underrated "The Highwaymen". The sounds of Americana along with the hillbilly vibe crossed with his traditional beautiful strings and moody piano make for a terrific combo:

1917 Jojo Rabbit The Lighthouse Little Women Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
I can easily see Newman winning. Not just for 1917, but as a “you had a good year” trophy, with The Highwaymen and Tolkien also to his credit.

And yeah, I think (Thomas) Newman is picking up his first for 1917. But obviously that's just based on on-paper perspective alone.
This is one category that I'd actually like to see Joker show up in, but it's not at all the type of score that appeals to Academy tastes so ultimately I see it missing out.

John Williams gets nominated because he is John Williams while Alan Silvestri's work is overlooked. His Endgame score in particular is miles above Williams' Star Wars sequels.

I do think that Silvestri's work in general has been severely overlooked by the Academy. But I really do not agree with you as far as him doing better work than Williams in the recent SW movies. Silvestri has come up with some very impressive individual things for big moments in Endgame (and Infinity War) but I think he's done less interesting things in the 'filler' parts of the movie. While Williams did amazing work both in the more and in the less important parts of the new SW films. 'Portals' is great but it doesn't hold a candle to the material Williams did in The Force Awakens. Or The Last Jedi really. For me anyway.

The more I think about it, the more I think "Joker" will indeed get nominated here. From my original prediction I think that Marriage Story and A Hidden Life are the shakiest (I just read on AwardsWatch from someone who saw Marriage Story that there ain't much score there at all). But yeah, "Joker" is in.
