How can he say that?! Did he not see Black Panther?! All of that social commentary! I was shook the fortieth time a white person was called a "colonizer." And when the villain went on his long spiel about people "who look like us" being oppressed, I laughed shed a few tears.

Scorsese is such a fucking boss. And he's not totally off base regarding the MCU (if that's what he is referring to).

Pretty sure Marty's aware that technically speaking, yes, the MCU is literally cinema, he's using "cinema" here like some readers use "literature" solely to describe great novels. He means it's not *good* cinema.

This is such a boring conversation, and I kind of agree with Scorsese. But still, 2012 called and asked for its discourse back. Yep. I thought "A-list filmmaker disses superhero films" stopped being news in 2015 but rehashing the same exact debate every few months works too, I guess.

The problem is that "movies made for children" is now 90% of movies in the Box Office, and that it's hardly just children and teens watching them. It's a society where 30,40 year olds await "excitedly" for the new superhero in spandex movie, with the same trite plot, gratuitous VFX and bad performances, and as 20 previous ones...
Joker is in another league of course. But even the best non-Joker example I can think of now, Logan, was young-adult-fiction level at best...

Oh honey, I thought we'd all moved on from the 'Is that a nipple or is it art?' discourse.

I'm with Scorsese here. The Marvel and DC films may be fun for people. I get that. But for me, I can't feel anything for these adults running around in silly costumes with a serious face. I just can't. I'm sorry. Even when they show the character's backstory, I feel no connection. None. Jodie Foster actually said the same thing Scorsese just did about it being like going to a theme park, seeing these movies. It enrages many Marvel fans to read that, but I personally can't disagree. I'm just glad we won't see a Scorsese super hero film.

I like Stern a lot but I wish he would just fucking allow Downey to finish his thoughts without interrupting him so often.

I don't think Scorsese meant that in a literal way. It's like saying Disaster Movie isn't art. Technically, it is art. It's just not good art. When Scorsese says Marvel movies aren't cinema, he probably means they aren't good cinema. I'm pretty sure Scorsese knows Marvel movies are made and shown in theaters.

Do we pretend Harry Potter is great literature like Anna Karenina or Moby Dick? Because the gulf in artistic achievement between something like Endgame and something like Goodfellas/The Godfather/Annie Hall/Mulholland Dr. etc. is just as wide. There's no comparison. Now, I think a superhero film could be that great; it just hasn't been made yet, much as I appreciate very good films like TDK, Spider-man 2, Batman Returns, etc.

Well, he's right they are taking over and that is beyond obvious especially now since an 89 year old box office/ Oscar trend is about to get broken.

Starts talking about cinema at the 12:44 mark. At a little past 12:45 Scorsese says "a greater revolution than sound" - referring to streaming services in general. On Nov 29, 2018 - pacinoyes (ahem) wrote Netflix was maybe the biggest change in cinema since sound (in thread below). Now in less than 11 months it seems quite logical to say, the world changes in dynamic exponential real time now........ movie-awards-redux.freeforums.net/thread/9347/2018-york-critics-circle-winners
