Now that the Joker movie's being released, we need to do this. I'll vote tomorrow after I see it.

Phoenix's pretty good but Ledger's iconic. Both are different though.

Just saw it. I was hoping it would be a harder decision.

Phoenix's pretty good but Ledger's iconic. Both are different though. This is exactly how I feel right now. I thought Phoenix was very good, and even amazing in the last part of the film, but I still prefer Ledger's Joker.

Phoenix was wonderful but with Ledger I had the feeling I was watching Joker, not just a mentally disordered guy who became a criminal.
Maybe JP wins the Oscar and he sure gave a great performance but didn't remind me of Joker as much as Ledger did.

I still give the edge to Ledger, but I think that it's due to having far less to work with and still making the game-changing impact that he did. Phoenix was great, but you can see the DNA of his Joker in prior performances. Nothing Ledger had ever done could've projected his Joker.

Ledger gets my vote. Phoenix was remarkable as The Joker, but I was expecting him to be good. Ledger's performance however blew my socks off, and was more impressive. At the time I, and a lot of other people, didn't think he was capable of delivering such fantastic work.

Phoenix was great, but as cliched as it is to say this, Ledger was transformative. Feels easy to take his performance for granted after 11 years, but if I were to see that performance for the first time today I would still have the same reaction. Regardless of wherever you stand on The Dark Knight as a whole whether you think it’s great or overrated, it’s hard to deny Ledger’s impact on that film. You could have never have guessed he had that in him.

It's hard to compare the two performances and each has its own advantages. Phoenix has the advantage of an arc and gets to grow his character and play different facets. Ledger had the advantage of not having to confine himself to any rules and could be adventurous and do whatever he wanted, because the role and his movie lent themselves to that.
But Ledger remains the definitive Joker to me, and I guess that basically means I prefer his performance.

Ok, I'm kidding, not the best Joker performance although I loved Jack's Joker as a kid...

Ledger is totally fantastic and obviously brilliant but I'm gonna go with Phoenix here.
UPD: Nov 30 - Changed my vote to Ledger. Phoenix is still great but I do have to say that with time the impact of his performance has lessened a little bit while Ledger keeps getting better.

Phoenix isn't in the same stratosphere.

Joaquin did a great job but he would have had to have given one of the dozen or so best performances I've ever seen for me to say he was better than Ledger.

Phoenix was truly incredible, but I still think that that Ledger's is hands down the best performance I've ever seen.

It's still Ledger. That's top ten performance of all time material. Phoenix is still very good and clearly the silver medal Joker.

I loved Joaquin but I'm going to give Heath the edge. It was such a contast to anything Heath did prior.

Hey, let's face it, they're both of them just lucky Phil Hoffman never played the Joker.
