Matthew Fox in Bone Tomahawk. I think Fox can be good with the right material, but I also think he’s limited. Maybe he’s too modern looking and yet I was surprised by his performance in Bone Tomahawk.

Jim Carrey in The Truman show. I never liked him in comedic roles. In this movie he really showed great acting skills.

Robert DeNiro did something extremely difficult imo - he removed the charisma from his portrayal in Everybody's Fine - which was his best onscreen performance post-Heat (along with Wizard of Lies, with The Irishman pending for me). Usually people say an actor is charismatic as if that's a test of acting skill - it can be, but not all people are charismatic so all portrayals shouldn't be either - and he dulled this character in all the best ways. The performance was grounded, believable, sad and precise and came in a period where he really struggled with his career choices so unfortunately a lot of people looked right by it. I wasn't expecting him to give that performance and it was a clear sign that when engaged, one of our greatest ever actors could still create a character in surprising ways.

I always liked him before that; although, I didn't find him that impressive in The Truman Show or Man on the Moon. I didn't think he was bad, but I thought he was just fine. After seeing ESotSM though, I was blown away by how great he was even better than Winslet who got all the award recognition. At the very least, I think he should have been nominated, although that year was very competitive.

Ryan Reynolds in Buried. He really surprised me here & literally carried the film (the entire film is just him stuck in a box haha). I wish he would do more dramatic work.

Ben Affleck in BvS Dawn of Justice. I strongly believe this guy has almost no talent in acting so I was convinced him playing Batman would be a disaster.
Turns out he was very decent in the role even though the script was weak.

Selena Gomez in A Rainy Day in New York. She's a legitimately talented actress and and one of the best things about a mediocre film.
Justin Timberlake in The Social Network.

I honestly never expected such a lovely performance from here!! Kind of liked the film but definitely Selena was by far the best thing in it (Elle Fanning was also pretty good).

Paul Walter Hauser in Richard Jewell. Never saw that coming. THIS Also Robert Pattinson in basically anything since 2014. I've always assumed that he was just a pretty boy who got lucky . Boy was I wrong !

Joaquin Phoenix in Joker giving us one of the worst leading performances in a popular film in recent memory was extremely surprising Speaking of the Joker , I also gotta say Heath Ledger in THE DARK KNIGHT . I mean a lot of people thought that Heath was a talent to behold after his magnificent performance in BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN but very few actually believed that he could deliver as the Joker . I remember a lot of people being surprised when we all found out that he was cast as the Joker.I also felt that he was a strange choice for such an iconic character.Needless to say , he proved everyone wrong .He had the guts to take the challenge , and the rest is history.

I think if Ledger hadn't died he'd be one of the most beloved currently working actors.

Hayden Christensen in Shattered Glass (back when I saw it in 2004 amid the dreadful SW prequels).
Waltz in Django Unchained (because it proved so quickly that he was a one-trick pony).

Michael Keaton in Birdman and Matthew McConaughey in Dallas Buyers Club.
I really didn't think they had such great performances in them. And both even validated it with other good work later.
