I rewatched it today for the third time and it's still one of my favorites of all time. One of my favorite screenplays, one of my favorite ensembles, one of my favorite supporting performances (Patinkin!). Timeless classic.

I think it's as good as it gets. Timeless 80s neverland classic. It had all the magic....and it's hard to imagine there will ever be another film like this. Difficult to believe anyone can not like it, or it's just people in need of brain cells check.
The only thing I felt it lacked was the score of Unforgiven. It had a great score of its own don't get me wrong, but I just always imagined the score of Unforgiven would've been just the perfect marriage, and it would've brought me to tears.
But yeah.... this movie kicks.

It's one of the few movies where the unanimous positive reaction to it is literally indicative of how good it is - it's hard to imagine any film being that well liked - ie most great films are on some level divisive in the way all good Art usually is - but Princess Bride is almost floating above any standard critical analysis, if you don't like it, you're on some level fncked up Speaking of directors who never lived up to their promise - Rob Reiner's first 4 were all aces and then.......well.....

Well... if you're referring This is Spinal Tap, Stand By Me, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally, and Misery.... I think that's his most popular 5. I'd say Stand By Me is the weakest link of those though I'm betting most would disagree with me. I just don't like brat packs I guess.

His first 4 for me - Spinal Tap, The Sure Thing, Stand By Me, Princess Bride........he made some good films after but his first 4 were really special imo.......

When I first saw it (which was a long-ass time ago) I didn't really understand what the big deal was - it felt like a standard kids movie to me and I was disappointed by its production values. Since then I rewatched it and was almost completely won over. My one issue with it remains its score which just sounds cheap whereas a proper lush orchestral one would've been just perfect. Other than that, the movie's excellent - witty, sweet, entertaining and charming.

It's good, definitely not my favorite from Reiner though. Wouldn't even say it's Top 3 (Spinal Tap and Stand By Me destroy it, and Misery's better by a bit).

I like it, but am not as big a fan of it as some people. I think it's an example of the principle that a movie gets a pass for everything if it's really and truly funny. That's "all" you need to do to satisfy an audience, of course getting laughs is easier said than done so it's more of an accomplishment than that statement would lead you to believe.
Also I think part of the appeal it has for people is how unique it feels. It doesn't really belong to any era. It's way too old fashioned to have been made today (or in the 80's, even though it was) like those Errol Flynn swashbuckler movies. But then it's too weird and eccentric to be from the 30's or 40's.
