Are the people voting for The Joker just trying to will it into existence? I see people saying that Marriage Story isn’t “important” or a message movie but I feel like that only means something if there was a “woke” alternative to beat it and I’m not seeing one. The Netflix concern.. fair enough though. Jojo Rabbit is that alternative. With the words 'important' and 'message' already figuring their way into the discource about it in a pretty intense way. I know it's not a critical hit but that doesn't seem to matter all that much if it ends up having massive support from the industry. And I suspect it will.

It's certainly a great sign that it was able to win the Audience Award after taking such a critical drumming. I'm not sure I see a path though yet unless it's like Spotlight and wins screenplay and Picture or like Grand Hotel and just wins Picture. At least last year with Green Book, even though I didn't want it to happen, there was a path through Ali and screenplay. At least OUATIH and Marriage Story both have paths to a win, and if The Irishman or 1917 end up becoming the new frontrunner, I would say that the former's path would be something like director/supporting actor/picture and the latter is something like director/cinematography/picture.

Hmm... I voted for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood but I don't feel very confident about that. Nothing really stands out to be honest.

The least controversial frontrunner wins Best Picture (that'd be Marriage Story), with Best Director going to Tarantino.
Roma had a lot more against it than just Netflix bias - foreign, slow, B&W, arthouse. Marriage Story has none of that against it.
