With Ad Astra coming out, I thought it would be interesting question and I tend to feel that Gray is sort of an underrated filmmaker. Despite some of his lovely collaborations with Joaquin Phoenix, I’d have to say Lost City of Z. Between it’s subject matter, it’s surprising performance by Charlie Hunnam, it’s technical craft and it’s theme of obsession, it’s just a movie that really spoke to me. Anyway have at it.

I have only seen Two Lovers, the Lost City of Z and We Own the Night. I liked WOTN more than the other two.

The Immigrant. Totally swept me off my feet the first time I saw it, and still I'd say it's among the most under-discussed films of the decade. A total marvel. Two Lovers is a close second for me.

Oh honey, The Immigrant.
I will never understand how this movie wasn't Oscar worthy and how Marion didn't get a 2nd Oscar for her superb performance. Other actresses have been nommed or won them for much less.
I can only assume that the answer is Weinstein.

The Immigrant, closely followed by The Lost City of Z.
Not a fan of Ad Astra, unfortunately.

Two Lovers, which also features my favourite performance from Joaquin Phoenix.

The Immigrant with honorable mention to Two Lovers. It's been really interesting to see him grow as a filmmaker over the years.

Probably Two Lovers, with Lost City of Z as a close second.
I like The Immigrant overall, and would like to rewatch it at some point, but Phoenix's performance really did not work for me. It's unfortunate because I feel like the film is something I should have loved, and it feels weird to say that Phoenix brings the film down since I usually love him.

This tweet kind of sums up my thoughts on him in general. I think pretty much every movie he makes is a poor mans version of someone elses stuff (though I never saw his debut). I think Two Lovers is probably the closest to escaping that label, but it's one I admire more than love. We Own the Night is the only one I full on enjoyed watching without much reservation, or feeling like I was losing interest and going to fall asleep by the time the final act came around.

The Immigrant. Cottilard gives an all-time great performance.

The Immigrant and Lost City of Z stand head and shoulders above the others I've seen. Not sure which I prefer. The Immigrant is a really beautiful and tragic film but Lost City is so ambitious and tickles my fancy for movies about searching without finding. Percy Fawcett's unquenchable hunger is so damn palpable and haunting.
So I don't wanna decide.

The Immigrant, Two Lovers and The Yards.
LOL at the philistines comparing him to PTA and saying he's a poor man's *insert meme filmmaker here*.
There is obviously no wonder why he is one of the American filmmakers that the French love.
