It might just be me, but I think these two tend to favor each other and sound very similar. Who do you prefer as an actor? Do you have a preference looks-wise?

Love ‘em both. I’m not sure that Cruise has ever done anything as utterly staggering as Hawke’s performance in First Reformed ... Magnolia, Collateral come mighty close, but not there ... but throughout his career he’s been a much more daring and audacious actor. He’s always exciting and for that you kinda have to admit he’s among the better actors of his generation ... even if he has a lot of crap on his resume. I do love Hawke, but I’d love him more with the more I see him outside of his comfort zone.

Hawke can be really good when he wants to be, but I'd argue that Tom Cruise is the greatest movie star of all time. The man is just pure, unfettered electricity when he's on-screen, and his versatility and range is staggeringly underrated. This man played Lestat, Ron Kovic, Frank T.J. Mackey, Vincent, Les Grossman... characters who couldn't be more different than one another, and yet he utterly owned each and every one. For me, it's no contest.

This to me is like a comparison of something you are mostly indifferent to (Cruise) with something you kind of dislike but once - exactly once, for 2 hours - really really loved (Hawke).
Hawke was an annoying as fnck guy irl to me - a guy who used to think he was Paul Westerberg (his song "I'm Nuthin" (excruciating that one is)) and he was playing the Westy role of Ryder's affection in Reality Bites then a lot of movies where he's just fine but not special....and out of nowhere gave my #1 performance of the year in First Reformed.....but I am saying that's lightning in a bottle and I'll work it out with my therapist ..........but I'd be anxious to be proved wrong again.
Cruise doesn't have anything I like as much as that but has more stuff I like (I guess) and doesn't put on the annoying pretentious affectations like Hawke does ........... and I admire the star appeal and what goes with it. I don't think Hawke could give this performance, I don't think he could pretend it......

Cruise for me. I do think Hawke gave the best performance last year though but I find Cruise way more watchable.

this brings back up the consistency vs. peak work debate because nothing Cruise has done comes remotely close to First Reformed, but then again First Reformed is the only Hawke performance I love and Cruise is always watchable so he gets my vote.

looks-wise it's obviously Cruise religion-wise, literally anyone else.

I'll vote for Cruise though I love Hawke's work very much. It's funny, I always thought Hawke was impersonating Cruise in the film Lord of War.
