Very interesting and somewhat touching little film.
The on screen chemistry between the two leads is the biggest advantage of the movie plus the dialogue. It is heavily based on dialogue (I always enjoy smart and quick dialogue) and the two main characters being so different. Something very cleverly depicted (Pryce being very popular, even with Hopkins' gardener, Hopkins always in white clothes and Pryce always in black...)
The diversity between them and their efforts to find a common route is something I could have watched for another hour. I really enjoyed the first half of the film (which takes place in the countryside) but unfortunately, in the second half (taking place in the Vatican), Meirelles tried to give Pryce a background story with some very long flashback scenes and imo that didn't work. None of these flashback stories didn't really convince me of Pryce's sorrow and regrets.
Maybe they should have dealt more with Hopkins' background, meaning the scandals his pope was accused of, his confession story etc. Now that would have been something special!!
Overall, a fine film with two great performances, but imo it could have been a masterpiece and failed.
7.5/10
