I re-watched it yesterday for the first time in a few years - and it's lost none of its supple magic. It's complete with luxurious period trappings, a rapturous score, and two glowing star turns from Paltrow and Fiennes - its delightfulness belies its strength as an incredibly moving, wholly involving romantic comedy. Please, share your thoughts.

I watched it about 20 years ago and as far as I remember, I liked it. Great set deco and costumes and of course performances by Gwyneth, Dench (especially them) and Fiennes.
I like John Madden as a film maker, he's done quite a few fine films and this is one of his best. I would give it a 7/10.
Having said all these, I would never give this movie a BP Oscar...
Life is Beautiful, Thin Red Line and Private Ryan were far better imo.

I used to really dislike it when I was in my teenage years and not just because of which movies it beat at the Oscars, but oddly enough because of the sexual content which I then found to be really out of place in the movie.
Thankfully I had the good sense to rewatch it years after and my mind was changed. I still don't see it as anything extraordinary or really all that special but it is a charming and witty picture with a wonderful ensemble cast. It's not anything I find to be particularly stimulating cinematically (Madden is kind of a snooze-worthy director, imo) but its humor and performances do make the thing work. As well as the gorgeous Sandy Powell costumes, of course. And I now feel much calmer about the sex scenes even though there's one I still find to stand out like a sore thumb in the movie (with Simon Callow, I think it was).

Well, my favorite of that year's Lead Actress nominees was Fernanda Montenegro in Central Station, but I do prefer Paltrow to Blanchett here - for me, Elizabeth just isn't the fully-formed screen giant that it is for so many, though I like her performance just fine. Paltrow is so warm and charming here - it's a bonafide star turn.

I enjoyed watching the Oscars before when I was younger, but around that time is when I started to pay more attention to what was likely to be nominated and win, but I was still really naive because I was very biased at that time and hoping that Montenegro could pull off the upset of all upsets despite Paltrow being one of the biggest locks that year. I can still let bias cloud my judgment, but hopefully not to that degree. Anyhow I used to prefer Cate Blanchett's performance over Paltrow's as well, but over time I've grown to really love Paltrow's performance. Comedy isn't easy to do, but Paltrow makes it all seem so easy.

Doesn't deserve half the hate, nor half the praise.

Doesn't deserve half the hate, nor half the praise. Pretty much this. I think it's got a solid script, a gorgeous score and some very fine production values (and Gwyneth is very good in it), but I think Joseph Fiennes is miscast and really brings the whole thing down substantially. I do think it's overall a more consistent film than Saving Private Ryan, but neither one is the best of the nominees (or even second-best).

It's so silly that for some folks this film seems to be symbiotically connected and even in some ways defined by SPR when the two have literally nothing in common apart from their awards rivalry.

As you ask so kind:
I liked it, when I first saw it, but it has even grown on me. The screenplay is gorgeous. A real treasure, full of shakespearian esprit and wit. When I watched the film the second and third time I noticed so many new jokes and facets within many scenes. Also the cast is very good. Paltrow quite deserved her oscar, but it's also the minor characters that shine, especially Geoffrey Rush. It looks good and is aided by a fitting score as well. There are some scenes though that are a bit kitschy and Joseph Fiennes is not bad, but not ideal for Shakespeare. It's probably in my Top 10 that year.

It's a charming, funny film. Plus, being a fan of Shakespeare's plays, I enjoyed all the little in-jokes and homages.

A few comments above were not happy with the casting of Joseph Fiennes as Shakespeare & that's okay, it's understandable. I am more surprised Joseph's career did not skyrocket. Both Elizabeth & Shakespeare in Love were released the same year which was phenomenal for him. Perhaps he does not like being in the spotlight? I have no idea. Overall, this is a great film & surely is carried by the music.

Just finished my first watch of it and I really liked it a lot. A very fine film all in all.
