Death Proof
This movie consists of:
65% shots of feet 30% inane conversations 10% CRAZY AWESOME stuntwork 5% CRAZY KIWIS 1% lapdancing
I know that comes out to more than a hundred, but these things are not mutually exclusive.
I'm so conflicted on this one. The first half of the film is pointless, mean-spirited shit and I hated it. The second half is fairly entertaining until it turns on the heat and becomes a deliriously badass chase movie, and then it is incredible. But we didn't need the first half at all, and the second half spends too much time setting things up when we just want the badass car chases already.
But when those car chases start, DAMN are they worth it.

I'm Not There. I don't know what I expected, but it sure wasn't this. Wow. I loved it. Whatever it was. Best metaphorical biopic ever. Only metaphorical biopic ever, but we need more of them. Why didn't this get nominated for best picture? I understand why the Oscars didn't touch it, but aren't we enlightened?

Your avatar appears to be praying for a PTA sweep. My ballot somewhat reflects that...

Into the Wild
Interesting, but I don't see why this movie makes this kid into a hero. Eh, whatever. Hal Holbrook apparently got nominated here because he's old, and good at acting like he's old. Because, you know, he's old.
Gonna vote in a sec.

But he doesn't really do anything. He's an event that happens in Chris's life. As a piece of acting, he doesn't do much more than look like a nice old man. The script doesn't give him anything to work with, he does what he can. But he can't make something out of such a part.

I haven’t seen the movie I n over a decade, but I remember him being an incredibly soulful, genuine presence. Holbrook created a character that you instantly feel connected to and root for Chris to get adopted by him or whatever it was that was happening in the silly movie.

I haven’t seen the movie I n over a decade, but I remember him being an incredibly soulful, genuine presence. Holbrook created a character that you instantly feel connected to and root for Chris to get adopted by him or whatever it was that was happening in the silly movie. That's fair. He did well with what he had to work with, but the character had so little development that I just can't see how he got nominated. I don't dislike the performance, but I don't see why this particular man gets singled out in our praise when the rubber tramps exist, having bigger roles with heavier arcs that allow their actors to at least try something. Holbrook shows up, looks like an incredibly nice man, but isn't given more to work with. All insights into his character are straight up given to us in an info dump, and we have very little to go on for why he matters so much to Chris. That's my issue. Holbrook is rather good with a pretty flat character, but his whole performance comes down to a one note "kindly old guy" performance that could just as easily be done by any other older actor and even if they were inferior to him, it wouldn't be felt because his part was so useless. But acting has never been my forte. I don't get people's fascination with it, when acting is merely one small tool. Writing and directing is the important part of the movie. Followed by editing, probably. Acting is down the list in importance; it only really matters to me if it is bad, and Holbrook was certainly not bad.
