I just found out about kabaddi and it looks like one of the greatest things ever. It's like a game of tag as played in the Thunderdome. It's one sport that actually looks like something I'd want to play.
I've seen some games of Aussie Rules Football and it's pretty sick.

I never understood why curling is an Olympic sport and bocce (boules) isn't.

Oh honeys, pole dancing should be an Olympic sport... and I'm not just saying that because I'm good at it... but because it would boost attendance.

I'm a big golf fan (prob. my second favorite spectator sport after football) so I will always support it's expansion.
I can always use more women's beach volleyball on TV too.

Wasn't sure what thread to put this in, but it looks like you lot have some AFL coming your way in the coming weeks.

Sports are not my thing, but I love seeing the ones that are fun to watch. Not like American football, which stops every ten seconds for a thirty second break to "strategize." Now if only I can find kabaddi games around here. Literally the only kabaddi I've found in my area was some local mosque holding a semi-pro tournament last year, which would have been cool to watch but I was working that day.

I saw a bit of handball like 3 weeks ago. Don't understand what the hell the rules are, but I could watch people throw a ball as hard as they can at a goalie all day.

What's the sport in the winter Olympics where people are skiing and then they whip out a gun and start shooting at sh it all of a sudden.....I think it's called Biathlon - I would watch that every day......... the only way that sport could better is if it involved beer either before the skiing or before the shooting ........or simultaneous to both. I meant worse......did I say better......um........

It's already immensely popular over here, man... Not as popular as it should be. I'm a soccer ref. There are thousands that get played every weekend in even the small section of the Washington D.C. area that I work. It is not uncommon to see referees doing 5-6 games a day, and even then there are a lot of games that go completely uncovered, or only receive one referee. There has been a massive uptick in the sport's popularity. And besides, soccer really isn't that interesting. In comparison to American football or baseball or basketball, it looks mighty good. Out of the popular team sports, it is perhaps the only one that doesn't put me to sleep. So in that sense, it is underrated.

Lots of people play pickup soccer but as a spectator sport it isn't even close to NFL/NBA/MLB in terms of popularity in the US. NFL and MLB make like 10x the revenue of MLS and watching European soccer is still pretty niche outside of expats.

It'll never become a popular televised sport because the only advertising you can do is plastering a sponsor on the clock or something of that sort. Football, baseball, basketball -- they all have lots of opportunities to pause and get precious advertising revenue.

Just to put some things into perspective... MLS currently has a $1.1B revenue worldwide. While it's barely in the top 15 in all sports leagues around the world, it has only been around since 1996. For comparison, La Liga currently has a $4.5B but has been around since 1929 and Bungeslinga has $4B which has been around since 1963.
MLS is now currently not far behind Brazil's league and is nearly double what NASCAR is.
It will never reach NFL or MLB or even the top European leagues, but it's growing at a HUGE rate.

If people were watching they'd figure out how to monetize it. Looked it up and the MLS Cup averaged 300k viewers and the World Series and NBA Finals averaged 15 million each and the NFL is obviously even bigger than that. It's not remotely close. Soccer gets enormous TV ratings in Europe and Latin America, like the NFL here and even bigger for a major event like the World Cup, so there's nothing intrinsically wrong with it as a TV sport. Americans are just not interested for the most part.

Well I can't complain in that aspect, that Eurosport has a great coverage of Snooker and I can watch the most of any important tournaments. Still would like it to gain more interest world wide (knowing that will never happen) so I can also write more about it
