Fuck me, I just rewatched this and I actually kinda liked it. I still don't care about the Tate stuff but the DiCaprio/Pitt dynamic is tremendous. Tarantino's best since Jackie Brown, although that's not really saying much.

That’s a great analysis, a lot of the stuff about how the actor/stuntman dynamic manifests in the reality of the characters’ lives went way over my head when I watched it but now seems super obvious. Can’t wait to find the time to rewatch this one.

Third watch today... and I'm done fucking around. I gotta bump my rating to a 10/10. It's just... I love every damn scene. The damn thing is magic and hits me just the right way. Second best of the decade for me after... well, you guys know what it's after.

Second best of the decade for me after... well, you guys know what it's after. It really holds up incredibly well, which I honestly didn't expect after the first watch because I didn't think the climax would have the same impact after knowing what's coming. But everything leading up to the climax only gets better with repeat watches. Definitely in Tarantino's top 3, and I can see it matching his 2nd best (Inglourious Basterds) in time.

Let me see if I have this straight - your top 2 films of the decade are two Pacino films and your favorite band is the 'Mats?

But it's a rock solid #2.

Just saw it on a flight. What a cringey piece of shit.
DiCaprio was good though. Still fucking hate him but he was easily the only thing about it that’s not trash.

Well I'm in the camp that liked it but thought it was deeply flawed... but I, for one, am excited that Brad's gonna win for it.

I remember really liking the soundtrack, Grier, Forster, and De Niro, but feeling like the second half of the movie was paced weirdly - I only saw it once like 5 years ago though, and Hollywood was so damn good that I'm totally up for giving this one another shot, given that several people now who feel similarly to me on that one think Jackie Brown is as good or better than it.

They feel similar because QT allows the characters to really come into their own, to flesh out, to become ingrained in the world he’s built. But I can’t ignore the influence of Sally Menke, whom stephen has frequently pointed out to be a noticeable miss in Tarantino’s work without her. She knew the right beats and how to maximize the emotional resonance in his films, which is why Jackie Brown stands proudly near the top of his filmography.

I’m very much looking forward to my 3rd viewing but have been waiting on my wife to watch it with so who knows when she’ll be ready to watch it?

Liked it so much more the second go-around. Ring able to sit until the finale and just vibe with this movie was a far more satisfying way to go about it than to expect every Tarantinoism in his repertoire. Not sure I care for that finale however, and goddamn are there dull moments in this. All in all really glad I caught this again., I had the theater to myself. - 7/10, 'twas a 4 or 5 upon first viewing

I really liked it, but didn't love it. Shame, because it had the potential of becoming one of my favourites. Pasting my Letterboxd review here:
This is such an odd film to dissect, because a lot of it is brilliant, but the whole thing doesn't really come close to becoming something special.
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood had the potential to be a truly fantastic film, but a few factors hold it back by quite a bit. The biggest problem here is that its premise is stretched way too thin. A lot of screentime is spent on the Spahn Ranch scene and the buildup to it, and most of it feels like padding. In fact, a good amount of scenes feel unnecessarily extended; I get that Tarantino wanted to get that "slice-of-life", laidback 60s Hollywood vibe, but really, it's very much a 2-hour film stretched to 161 minutes, and hence it can get a bit boring at points. That, and combined with some awkward cuts, made it clear that the editing needed work. Another factor is that the three separate storylines - Rick and Cliff, the Manson family and Sharon Tate's - don't quite come together properly in the end; they still feel like three separate parts of the film instead of forming a coherent whole. Among minor flaws, the Cliff vs. Bruce Lee fight is fun but it has an offensively bad portrayal of Lee. Also, this needed more of Rick and Cliff's bonding and Sharon, and less of the Manson family and feet shots.
All the complaints above may have sounded like I disliked it, but it's the opposite. Despite my misgivings, this is genuinely a really solid film. The screenplay is great, the direction is excellent (if self-indulgent), all the actors are in top form, everything involving Rick Dalton is gold (especially the breakdown in the trailer and the scene afterward), the production design is gorgeous and sublime (the work that went into recreating 60s Los Angeles is mind-boggling), they got the retro vibe just right, and the brutal, bloody carnage of the climax gives way to a thoughtful, tragically bittersweet fairy tale-like ending. So while it is not a masterpiece in my opinion, it's still a handsomely mounted love letter to a bygone era, and an enjoyable time at the movies. The fact that this is my least favourite 2019 Best Picture nominee shows just how good the Best Picture lineup is this year (unlike last year, where they made... certain mistakes).

I finally got around to a second viewing, and this just improves magnificently on a rewatch. It really just all falls into place once you know where it's going, and it erased basically all the gripes I had with it from a first viewing. It's mind-boggling to me that there are still people who think that this movie is "boring" or "about nothing" when there is literally so much going on at every moment of the film, it would take more viewings than I've had to truly wrap your mind around it all. It's ultimately a tale of two broken, nasty has-beens who, for one night, have a shot to put all their misplaced arrogance and aggression and violence to good use, all in contrast with that which they have to preserve. And that's not to mention, it's insanely hilarious from start to finish, and not that this is news, but the soundtrack is badass and the "Out of Time" sequence is one of the finest needle drops in recent cinematic memory. Just an instant classic moment at the center of this instant classic movie. Third best Tarantino for sure.
