Which group of British actresses do you prefer: the classically-trained Dames or the more avant-garde swingin' beauties?
It's without question the latter group for my tastes - I find them so much more interesting and dynamic as performers. All three are among my all time favorites. I find their performances to be more sensitive and calibrated - quietly powerful.

Funnily enough, I feel like Mirren and Redgrave belong in both categories (Redgrave lacks a Damehood only because she turned it down). Both are classically trained and both regarded as free spirited beauties in the 60's and 70's. Mirren was famous for always getting her clothes off before becoming establishment and playing Queens.

Well, Julie Christie is the love of my life AND the female star of the greatest American movie (McCabe & Mrs. Miller), Vanessa Redgrave is the best living actress and Charlotte Rampling is quite fascinating in her own right.
2nd group, no contest.

(Redgrave lacks a Damehood only because she turned it down). The same goes for Christie (and Glenda Jackson). Rampling was awarded and accepted an OBE, so perhaps she wouldn't turn the offer down were it to come for her.

I incline to the second group because of their filmography and why not, iconography. But they're all high caliber talents.

Well they are really maddening because in that "upper tier" of the UK GOAT actresses in the Best Actor/Actress Across Stage/Film/TV thread I consider and talked about Mirren/Smith/Glenda Jackson/Dench/Redgrave as all in the same class although they are not in age really. I really love those 5 - what a group! - 4 Triple Crown Winners and 1 close (Dench missing the Emmy) - and while I love what Christie and Rampling brought to the movies - a certain loveliness and an indefinable class and grace and transcendent quality - I have to take 3 of my big 5. So, Judi, Helen, Maggie for me - even if they're knocked down to a trio

Going with the first group pretty much for Dench alone, who has the best slate of work of all of them and almost always is the best thing in her movie. Less crazy about Mirren but she gets big points for The Last Station and Smith just always steals the show.
As for the second group, another strong slate of actresses here but I'm not crazy about any of them. I'm divided on Christie. Some of her work is endearing (Darling, Away from Her), others are either bland or annoying (Shampoo, Petulia). I admit not to having seen much of Rampling's work but I've been quite divided on what I've seen. 45 Years was great, The Night Porter was dreadful. Redgrave is the most solid actress in this second group. She's always pretty consistent and reliable but I don't think I've ever loved a Redgrave performance. Mary Queen of Scots comes the closest but she was outshined by Glenda Jackson there.

1. Mirren
Not many people touch Mirren. OMG MIRREN. MIRREN MIRREN MIRREN.
HELEN. MIRREN. The only bad word I have to say about her is that her only Oscar was an odd sweep. A decent performance but boring. Maybe not even top 10 of her work. But other than that, I don't wanna hear one word about her that isn't licking her feet.
2. Smith 3. Redgrave
4. Dench 5. Rampling
6. Christie
I guess the former group ranks a bit higher. Tough choice between Smith and Redgrave. Redgrave has more great work but Smith's highs feels higher and she knocks out that mistress role.
Really tough choice between Rampling and Dench. Rampling plays a perv well, but Dench also has a speciality.... the queen bee role.
Christie is last, I'm sorry. I don't dislike her, I'm just less enamored with her work. But I admit some of them needs a rewatch and maybe I haven't seen enough.

The first one. I find them warmer and more versatile than the others.

The second group,Julie,Charlotte and Vanessa, mostly for shallow reasons.Rampling and Christie when they were younger, were two of the most beautiful women in the world, they are still stunning.I also think they're genuinely great actresses.
