I was thinking about this controversial cover of Vanity Fair this morning over breakfast: It really is quite sexist, isn't it? Rachel McAdams was booked for it, but refused to take part. Anyway, which of these young female actors who entered the public conscious in 2003 is your personal favorite? Who do you find more talented?

Yeah, that cover would not fly today.I actually think they're both pretty limited actors but I would give Scarlett the edge in terms of talent, she has slightly more range whereas Keira is generally very one note, although she was great in Pride and Prejudice.I'm probably alone on this, but I don't find Scarlett all that attractive,Keira ,particularly when she was younger ,was really beautiful.

I consider Keira Knightley by far the more talented of the two. She has multiple performances I consider great, whereas Johansson has been really good in only a handful of films I've seen.

It is really really sexy ...........oh wait you said sexist.
Um.......moving on. But she - Scarjo - is the sexiest girl on the planet - and has been for a long time.
ScarJo is somewhat an equivalent of ........I don't know a male actor who hasn't lived up to her talent or something........I don't know Mickey Rourke or somebody like that although I'm not quite a fan of his but the way people talk about him. She has a Tony Award, a wide range of small and concentrated film work that is quite magnificent and broad and that she now wouldn't dare ........although maybe that'll change - she's young enough.
Knightly is more simple - she's gorgeous and a fine actress but ScarJo is the one who breaks your heart, steals your wallet, burns your house down, makes your friends no longer speak to you, sleeps with you just one more time and makes it all seems worth it .............but a year later you find she also took some of your best albums too.

Keira Knightley is consistently good but very samey. I can't remember the last time she surprised me with her acting decision. On the other hand, Scarlett Johansson can be a bit more volatile in the quality of her performances, but she is much more likely to surprise or even floor me as she did with her one-two punch of Her and Under the Skin.

they're both really solid standbys, but I have to go with Keira, queen of the costume drama, who's never given a performance I disliked. And I prefer her overall filmography.

If we're talking about talent, it's definitely Knightley. Far more talented and versatile than Scarlett.

Knightley by far. Neither great great great actresses. Scarjo is more versatil, but when she sucked, she really sucks

Actingwise both have their highs and lows. For both of them there is only one performance that really stands out with Lost in Translation and Pride and Prejudice respectively. As for looks: Keira is a very pretty girl. But Scarlett is just a beauty, so she wins on that term.

Oh honeys, I woulda got naked if they'd asked me... there is still room on the left, on Tom's lap.
ScarJo - I thought she was great in Under the Skin. There is plenty of potential.
Knightley is kinda bland for me... I know that sounds mean and catty, but she just has to take it on the chin.

Knightley is a consistently solid professional and Scarlett has a couple great performances. This is a little like the Stone/Lawrence debate in another thread, except I'm going to come down on the opposite side this time. Scarlett's great performances are so great you have to go with her. Lost in Translation and Under the Skin are two of the best lead actress performances of the past 20 years. If she keeps turning out periodic great performances at that rate for the rest of her career she'll end up with like 5 or 6 at that tier which would be a really good career regardless of whatever else she does. It's sort of the same situation with Natalie Portman, if she gives us a Jackie and a Black Swan every decade into her 60's or so she'll go down as having a great career. On top of that, although I am repeatedly on the record as not being a Marvel fan here, her Black Widow is iconic and she's always one of the best things about those movies. It is really really sexy ...........oh wait you said sexist. I really don't see the problem here. If someone wanted to do a magazine cover with some big a-list actress in an evening gown flanked by two naked men I wouldn't see a problem either and neither would anyone else.

pacinoyes countjohn - I wasn't expecting my labeling this cover as "sexist" to be controversial (at least, not from the two of you), but does the way that gender shapes power in traditional societies really need explaining?

Well I was just making a joke - or rather stealing the joke - from Spinal Tap actually - we just talked about Christopher Guest - come on that joke is in Spinal Tap Tyler! ..........but I would say No, how gender shapes power in traditional societies doesn't really need explaining..............although you could argue that's merely a simple default position and a better discussion is how some women - like Scarlett Johansson in particular know how to use their sexuality in a society that reward them for it are playing that power game just fine too.

I just think the power dynamic is really distorted when a man is fully clothed and a woman is nude in the same shot. Even if you didn’t want to go as far as labeling it “sexist,” I think at the very least you could call it exploitative. Just my personal take.

Oh honey, it's symbolic and emblematic. ScarJo and Knightley are actresses and their nudity represents naked emotion... it's about showing everthing, but always leave them wanting more... Tom is dressed because he's a fashion designer... he's about clothes. He also makes perfume, which is why he is sniffing her and probably thinking, 'Phew! When was the last time she washed her hair?' It does look a bit greasy.
It is a very classical image, often represented in Art, like in the painting below... which depicts an early audition.
The guy in the black is a director... he's pointing at the naked woman saying, 'That's the one I want! She's the next Amy Adams!'.
The other man is a casting director and he's thinking, 'He's such a pushover. I can't believe he's using that cane to keep down his boner. He's gonna owe me big time for this one'.
The clothed woman in the water is another actress and she's thinking 'I can't believe that bitch threw the script in the river before I could read!... Where is it? Goddamit! I think I'm getting my period'...
The naked actress is looking directly at the viewer, that's you... and thinking, 'Look all you want! I know I have great tits!'
... and if you look at the positioning of her foot, she can see that she's no wallflower. She knows exactly what she's doing.
It's ART, honey.

Knightley is perhaps more reliable and chooses better projects but she’s handily put in the shade by Johansson at her peak.
