This popped into my head since Travolta was discussed in the genre thread yesterday and while these guys do not show up on most (any?) "great actors" lists - they are a good comparison of guys who have been around a long time and been in some of the biggest films ever. Gere is an actor I dislike rather intensely - my least favorite American actor actually - and Travolta I could care less about but Blow Out is an all-time fave film of mine and Pulp Fiction is quite great too - so I would choose him easily. But these guys overlap in other ways too - Travolta more or less passed on roles that gave Gere a whole career (Yanks, Officer and a Gentlemen) and they battled for roles too. Lastly I always think of them with a leading actress - Gere/Roberts and Travolta/Nancy Allen - each worked with twice - now Nancy Allen wasn't a great actress but she was an adorable "type" and very effective in how she was used imo so I'll take Travolta-Allen any day over America's (not mine!) Sweethearts ............though I suspect I'm in the minority there:) Choose your movie star!

In their prime, I'd take Travolta. But I prefer latter-day Gere to "prime" Gere, and think he's better than Travolta ever was bar Pulp Fiction (and Arbitrage comes damn close).

Travolta had higher highs as an actor. I don't think Gere has ever given anything close to John's performance in "Saturday Night Fever" and he had been in some of the best films of all time (Blow Out, Pulp Fiction) but then again, Gere is often overlooked and underappreciated. He's great in "Internal Affairs", "The Hunting Party", "Norman", "Arbitrage" among others. I'd say he also has a more consistent career.

Gere wishes he had a performance as great as Travolta's in Get Shorty.
But... Gere/Roberts and it isn't even close.

Gere, Travolta is too weird!!!
Trovolta Gere is like Brad Pitt/Keanu Reeves. Pitt have the highlights but Keanu is more effective.
When Travolta is bad, he is really bad. I was never surprise by a Travolta performance since Saturday Night Fever. his seccond best in Hairspray.- Pitt was excellent in Moneyball, and tops by miles every Keanu Reeves had made. But Pitt could suck as hell.
Pitt is better than Travolta, but Gere is better than Reeves. Richard Gere performance in Chicago is much better than Travolta in Hairspray.-

I think Richard Gere is quite underrated. Not a "great" actor, but reliable most of the time. And here and there he surprises you in a positive way - like in Internal Affairs.
John Travolta is one of the few actors which really annoy me in most of their movies. I think the only two times I like him in a role are Get Shorty and Pulp Fiction.
So it's easily Gere for me.

Travolta just does nothing for me. I guess he's a good dancer.
Gere is a so-so actor but he has that Gable/Grant type leading man charm. If I were making a mainstream romantic movie in the 80's or 90's Gere would be near the top of the list for my male lead. Voted for Gere.

Poll closed, but Travolta is my super easy choice when comparing the two, but Gere / Roberts run Travolta /Allen a lot closer, but not close enough.
