I'm not one who likes to root against a movie's success, especially if I haven't seen it . . . but man, the Ryan Murphy-ness of it all is making it very hard not to.

I'm not masochist enough to watch that trailer. I however am probably masochist enough to have a double bill of this and Let Them All Talk.

Pretty strong early reactions to The Prom. Some really like/love it. Others are unimpressed. But overall, reactions are good. Probably more a Golden Globes thing than and Oscar thing, but probably too early to count it out for Oscars either. Entire cast is getting praised, except for James Corden, who is being ripped for playing a gay caricature. The unknown younger actors who carry the main storyline ( Jo Ellen Pellman and Ariana Debose ) are getting hailed as standouts, though that probably still won't stop Meryl Streep trying to steamroll them to get to another Oscar nomination . Streep and Kidman are getting a fair amount of praise though, and because of their status in the industry may stand a better chance in the awards derby than some young unknown breakthrough actresses.

Yeah, going by Anne Thompson's tweet, Streep and Kidman ( both of whom she makes a point to mention out of all the cast as shining in the movie) look like the likeliest push for acting nominations for this film:

First reviews are out. Currently on 76% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 6.2/10 average with 17 reviews. So far, that's worse than Into the Woods, the last musical Streep got nominated for.

Ouch Well as a Kidman fan, I can at least take some small satisfaction that she is pretty much the only praised element of that review (which should be no surprise, being the newly minted Greatest English Speaking Actress Of The 21st Century by the New York Times, and actually the best actress appearing in this movie): "Yet, it’s only Nicole Kidman who seems to grasp both the show’s oddball tone and the curious questions at hand. As the chorus girl who has yet to be called to play Roxie in “Chicago,” Kidman’s performance is unself-conscious, naturally goofy. Her face turns to an “O” in horror when someone is rejected; she raspily says, “Let’s see what’s trending” while pulling out her phone to look at Twitter, and does so completely in earnest; she makes jazz hands and Fosse shoulder snaps like someone good at it, the way Angie would be. Kidman, who might as well have walked away with the film, seems to have wandered onto the set and found herself completely at home, knowing instinctually what was silly and what was satirical." theplaylist.net/prom-review-ryan-murphy-20201201/

Knives have been out for Ryan Murphy for quite a while now. Even his recent tv efforts have been panned. It’s definitely something of a win for the film that reviews aren’t worse. It’ll be a hit on Netflix too. Still, it seems a bit too slight and campy for the Oscars. The only one that can probably still make a run imo is Streep. It also helps that her Soderbergh film is probably going to get good reviews as well.

Hmm.....a mostly negative review from the Wall Street Journal, but yet another major review that singles out Kidman as the one element that stands above the movie itself . Considering supporting actress looks an extremely barren category, maybe her making a credible run is actually doable. These are the type of notices that often get Kidman to the Globes and SAG, though not always to the Oscars itself. www.wsj.com/articles/the-prom-review-sitting-this-one-out-11607029028"As a dancer—not a star but a chorus girl down on her luck—Angie does what comes naturally. She tells Emma a story about the peerless choreographer Bob Fosse trying to shore up the courage of a dancer who’s got the steps, and the notes, but hasn’t yet found “The Zazz,” as Angie sings it while she dances. And Ms Kidman, who was never a Fosse dancer but certainly knows how to play one, does what comes organically in a film that’s short on slow-burn development. She is funny, slyly sexy, pleasantly trashy, thoroughly endearing and wonderfully entertaining. What a joy “ The Prom” might have been if the rest of the film had been up to her moves."

16/100 on Metacritic from Consequence of SoundIs Andrew Rannells a potential contender for the prestigious BFCA awards, now that they have 8 Supporting Actor slots or whatever? Or is the movie too much of a turd for anyone but Streep to have a chance?

Oh honeys, WTF?
This has a rating of 5.1 on IMDb. I normally like Ryan Murphy's shows (Loved Ratched)... Has the Kidman curse struck again?

It's basically a cinematic Rorschach Test from what I can tell Legend..........this scene will either appear cute or insufferable .......except for me where it appears as something to avoid at all costs ..............until The Northman comes out and maybe rights this wrong track she's been on for me...... This scene is marvelous/awful in its extreme attempts to be cutesy.......it's weird crotch shots of teen AND 50+ year old...........the hair, my God, the hair.........and last but not least wobbly accent...... MsMovieStar I suggest NOT watching this as you may go blind........ I went blind drunk myself

LOL! This board is super extra ! It's extremly silly, but also oddly entertaining to watch. Kidman is being generally reviewed as one of the best things about this film, but a handful of usual suspects here whose mission it is to shit on her for nearly everything she does (good reviews or not, whether they've seen it or not), that y'all gonna work overtime to deny her even that. Shouldn't y'all be putting this energy into James Corden? You know, the dude being shitted on in almost every review for messing this movie up with his presence.

I went blind drunk myselfI think they dropped this clip because they knew it was one of the few ones guaranteed to get a positive response ( 1.5K likes on the video to 28 dislikes says it all really). After Meryl getting mauled in reactions for the rap segment song they released, anticipaton died down for some. Because of that, another Meryl number comes with some risk attached (though I'm sure we'll see some eventually). And putting out a clip with anything that has Corden in it is a definite no-no (and he is the lead male actor, so is probably in a lot of the big music scenes Murphy should have just cast Nathan Lane). A Kidman clip was probably their remaining best option, in terms of starpower and her knowing how to sell this matetial. So this was a safe choice of clip to put out, and it appears to have gone down pretty well. This definitely isn't usually my kind of movie, but I think Kidman is doing fantastic work in this clip (and I find the scene set-up a bit schmaltzy, but Kidman salvages it through sheer commitment to the musical number). As with Moulin Rouge, she really understands how to commit to musical material, no matter how silly or outlandish. And while it's not Jennifer Hudson level or anything, she has a very fine and pleasant singing voice.

Kidman is obviously not getting an Oscar nomination for this. She’s never been an Oscar favorite, but SAG and/or the Globes may bite. The former likes her quite a bit and she’s managed a number of random nominations in the past.

It's only the Golden Satellites, so I wouldn't get too carried away, but co-MVP's of this film Nicole Kidman and Meryl Streep are on the board for their first nominations of the season. Streep is nominated in Best Actress In A Comedy Or Musical and Kidman is nominated in Best Supporting Actress. Kidman also recieved a Best Actress In A Limited Series nomination for The Undoing.
