Meanwhile, I've seen 5 of the 6 Competition movies so far. My ranking: 1. Marriage Story 2. J'Accuse 3. La Vérité 4. Ad Astra Right now I totally envy you. That are four of my most wanted films to watch (with J'Accuse being the most anticipated of the year by far). And except for Ad Astra, which is supposed to start next month, it probably will take a very long time till I can watch them in my country. I know I only get anticipation up on these films by talking about that, so apologies for that :-/ I heard a rumor today that the real knockout film of the festival is yet to be screened. I’m putting my chips on The Painted Bird.

God bless you Wil. Thoughts on Ad Astra? I found it disappointing, I’m afraid. It is ambitious and well intentioned, but it is heavy handed, full of overlong monologues and without any sense of mystery. A friend of mine defined it as “First Reformed” in space, and I kinda agree with that haha. That said, cinematography, sound and vfx are sensational. Well, that sounds awesome to me!

My ranking so far:
1. Ema (loved it, I’m gonna rewatch it the next couple of days, Mariana Di Girlosamo is outstanding, really hope she can win the Volpi Cup) 2. J’Accuse 3. Joker 4. Ad Astra (technically a wonder but i was not that convinced about Pitt) 5. Il Sindaco di Rione Sanità (surprise of the festival so far, i had pretty low expectations on this after seeing the trailer) 6. La Verité 7. The Perfect Candidate 8. Wasp Network 9. Marriage Story (not a Baumbach fan, Driver is outstanding though) 10. No. 7 Cherry Lane

J O K E R Joaquin can finally win. Did you like it better than Marriage Story? ETA: I just read someone say that he's like DDL in There Will Be Blood, and that he's undeniable. Also another highly reliable person said that we should mark it down for nominations in picture, director, screenplay, and a lot of techs. So I don't really see Phoenix losing now. ETAA: The person who said what other categories it should be predicted in also said Phoenix was better than Ledger.

I don’t want to compare Phoenix to Ledger because the two Jokers couldn’t be more different. But yeah, Phoenix is THAT undeniable. He completely reinvented the character without it losing an inch of its power. It’s probably his most visceral performance.

Is "Alex Billington" someone I should know or maybe someone on this board that I shouldn't offend and be respectful towards because if not I find myself really loathing Alex Billington and his Venice privileges to the extent that I'm missing the challenging film insights of Robbie Cullen.
Um.

Phonenix is getting complete raves. He's definitely getting nominated and could win.

Reviews for JOKER are like nothing I have seen before. It seems people really were not ready for a film like this, and I’m seeing a lot of analysis on how the public will take to it instead of critiquing the actual movie. 🙄 Wockeen is getting unanimous raves but I wonder if the divisive nature of the film will hurt his chances of winning.

I can not think of one performance - at least since TWBB where the logic behind the performance is as discussed as much as this one in even these preliminary reviews (real reviews not Twitter BS).......and I'm not someone drawn to the genre, festival madness, or movie critics to say the least but literally this performance has serious talking about acting and what goes into acting in a way that's wonderfully exciting.
I said it in another thread - there's a different category of performance emerging now and how we assess it - a mix of internet culture, "event" movies, social trends/underpinnings and streaming culture immediacy and this may be the (first?) great performance of this new entertainment era like this - it's quite unlike what movies used to be imo.

I'm very curious to see how the jury is going to respond to this. The reviews, strong as they are, are also thinkpieces that make me think that a lot of them had been pre-written in a way; they knew it was going to appeal to the perceived "incel crowd." Most of them talk more about how the movie has a dark and alienating message that can be taken up as a marching banner by the most unpleasant of people, and it's very interesting to see how so many people are having to reconcile that, as I wonder how many reviewers were expecting to hate it and would rather they had.

Ok, now that the reviews are out, I can say it: The Laundromat is TERRIBLE. How's Meryl? She's the best in the cast, which isn't saying much given how wasted the cast is. And she has a second role in the movie that I can't talk about that MAKES ZERO SENSE.
