The Golden Lion is JOKERRRRR Ok...this makes up for Phoenix not taking Best Actor, which felt the most likely prize. It's got enough prestige now to make a Best Pic run, and since Phoenix is the most praised aspect of the film, he will benefit in the Best Actor race. I'll be surprised if it gets a best picture nomination, but this definitely puts it in high competition for best actor and picture, the first was always the category it had the best chance at succeeding in.

Joker winning the Golden Lion is proof it's got muscle outside of its leading actor, and that's exactly what Phoenix needs to sustain a winning narrative.

Looking good for Phoenix, he's also being a lot more friendlier with the press which should help.

Winning the Volpi Cup for Best Actor could have kickstarted an "undeniable" narrative for Phoenix personally, but failing that, the film itself winning the Golden Lion is the next best thing.

You know when I started believing that Joker could really shock everyone?
I was in line for the first press screening that was supposed to start at 8.30am. They only let us in at 8.40 because we were all waiting for the jury, who wanted to see the movie first thing in the morning. They were dying to see this movie and it did not disappoint them.

I actually think this was even better than Phoenix himself winning the Volpi Cup. He's already got one of those, and winning a second one would've been great and all, but the film itself winning shows that its quality goes beyond its leading man. That's crucial.

I think that this ends up being better for Phoenix too because I think in order to win against Driver and Pryce, it probably couldn't just be about the performance. Sometimes someone can win in Best Actor without their film getting any other nominations or very few, but most of the time it's tied to the Best Picture category, so this gave Joker a really big boost to be nominated there which was exactly what Phoenix needed, imo, because Marriage Story and The Two Popes look like they'll both be nominated for Best Picture. Marriage Story will probably get at least 6 nominations (Picture, Director, Screenplay, Actor, Actress, Supporting Actress) and could possibly go as high as 9, and The Two Popes will probably get at least 4 nominations (Picture, Actor, Supporting Actor, Screenplay). I think Joker could go as high as 7-9 (Picture, Director, Actor, Screenplay, Editing, Cinematography, Makeup, Sound?), but could have also just wound up with 1 or 2 nominations.

I wonder if the Polanski film is a defining moment or the start of how US culture vs. the world in how we assess films or if that's just the way it'll be now. Like I wonder will it get re-reviewed........
It's at just 56% off 16 reviews on RT.......the David Ehrlich review which was widely syndicated is an incomprehensible mess of writing - not saying he's not entitled to his opinion, he is - but it clearly reads as an agenda based review (and fnck IndieWire btw), that he watched with his arms folded.

I can't see Joker winning BP Oscar, by no means. I highly doubt it will even get a nod.
But as it seems, Phoenix will be there, in the top-5 of the year.

As a possible BP nominee, probably not. But in general, I guess it will. I mean, as long as even the Iron Man movies aged well, why not this?

You compare the new Joker with Iron Man movies? Do you realize Joker has won one of the most prestigious awards in the world? There's something wrong in your head. Read again, dickhead! I'm saying that even crap movies did well so this one will also do well. I even said it may be nominated for BP. Where did you see I'm comparing them? Learn to read before you start posting bs.

Larrain is rumoured to have taken director, while there are rumours that Joaquin Phoenix and Ariane Ascaride from Gloria Mundi have won the Volpi Cups. If this is true, I don't think I saw a single prediction, here or elsewhere, list her as a possibility. Talk about a swerve. I predicted her! Too bad it didn't happen, but I predicted her. I don't think a single person predicted Joker getting the Golden Lion tho.
